Recently diagnosed Diabetic, found out day before thanksgiving.
Been trying to get my mind wrapped around the whole disease so to speak. Just introducing myself and looking to meet people with the disease and how they live their life.
Also found a website and looking for others for recipes to cook. Anyone recommend any.

Welcome aboard. I wish we had internet years ago when I was first diagnosed. Didn't even have test machines then.
The food you should eat is not that hard, it is counting the carbs that is a little difficult. That is the important stuff anyway. You will want to avoid the sugary dessert stuff, as it will push the bg's to an alltime high in a hurry, and you will not like that at all. There are lots of discussion here and other places for foods that work well, and foods to avoid. Me? I avoid pizza, it just keep raising my bg's for hours, so does Chinese food. The rest of the stuff is ok, just learn to measure the carbs.

Welcome to the forums! The most important thing is to keep your chin up and TEST TEST TEST, test as much as you can, get to know your body and how you feel when you BG is high, normal and low.
I found it really helped to keep a log of all my results when i was diagnosed (6 months ago).
Ask any questions you have on these forums, you will not be turned away or made fun of here.
Good luck and see you around the boards! :)

Hi I was dx in October.. LADA, type 1. My wife ordered DR. Bersteins books and while I doubt we can eat 30 grams of carbs a day.. it really explains diabetes. Best book we have read so far and we got the cookbook. Here is a link to that. Dr.B has had D for 50 years himself.
Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. A Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars. Official Web Site (http://www.diabetes-book.com/)
And we make pizza, and a version of the pizza I posted under reciped for tacos.. they come in at about 10 - 12 carbs. My wife has been watching Blaine's Low Carb on fit TV. He went low carb just to loose weight. But he is a chef.. so the ideas are good.

We make those pizzas all the time with low carb tortillas.. and is really good. It doesn't raise my BG at all.
When I was dx we were scared.. not sure about what to eat. We watch our carbs.. buy healthier foods.. I get exercise through work.. I walk so much as a mail carrier.
My numbers were higher at night even after I got the daytime ones down to about 100. At night I was in the 180's. I remembered the dietician saying eating protein with carbs helps to slow the rise over time.. so I bought some whey protien at GNC.. and I mix it in water with my HS snack for about 20 grams of protien and 4 carbs. Then I have a snack. So far this week, my numbers at night are down at least 40. There is also a window of time there where my lantus has worn off and the new shot hasn't started to work yet.
We are taking it one day at a time.. looking for new recipes.. looking at ways to get the numbers around 100 max.. I started out with readins in the 400's and some over 600. We have come a long way in a few months.
Welcome... Dave
Hi and welcome. A good place for recipes and info on diabetes is the ADA (American Diabetes Assoc). I use The New Diabetic Cookbook by Mabel Cavaiani, it has everything you need, including dietry info on carbs and a chapter on carb counting. Another book I have is "the New Glucose Revolution" which is much like the former. Test often until you are familiar with how things transpire for you as you will find that each individual has different needs insulin wise, food wise and medication wise. Also exercise is particularly good for diabetics. Diabetes won't hold you back from doing anything you want to do, so don't worry on that point. You are starting off on a good note so I wish you well.

hoosiernerd,
I agree with David S. The book that he recommended is excellent... Plus another book same author "The Diabetes Diet" Half of the book is information and the other half are recipes... I love the CHEESE PUFFS easy to make...
Good Luck...
