View Full Version : Changing the Date?

Ok, If anyone has booked a plane ticket or a hotel reservation let me know either on here or in a PM. Otherwise, read on.
It appears that some people can't make the May date and some are dropping out one by one due to that date. My question is should we move the event forward one month which was the 2nd most picked month.
Refer to http://www.diabetesforums.com/meet-and-greet/13283-df-meet-greet-vegas.html for hotel rates. Keep in mind some have gone up since that was made.
The dates being proposed are May 13, June 10, June 17, and June 24. So post your thoughts on moving the date to June.
Here are my thoughts. I'm game for whenever. June is a little hotter than May, but how much time does one really spend outside? Not to mention, a little sweating might do us all some good in trying to lose weight if we need to. I for one like it hot, so I'd pick the week where it's 110 degrees, lol. I also want the most people to attend. And for many, if they could make it in May, there really shouldn't be a reason they can't make it in June (although I'm sure there are some that way.)
I know some parents had problems with May and their kids in school. Therefore I'd assume by the last two June dates most would have kids out. I know Tony has a lawn mowing job, but I hope he could leave that for a few days and have someone else do it just that week? Or mow extremely tall grass the day he gets back. I want lots of input here.
So vote and put your input in.

Doesn't matter to me as I probably won't be able to make any of the dates. Even though we have good insurance, Hubby's recent illness and hospital stay has taken a big toll on the financial situation. To all who are going, I apologize for not attending and someone have tons of fun for me !! :)

Ohhhhhh... Juneish is good for me. I don't get out of school until June 2... The 17th or 24th is better an extra paycheck to blow at the Black Jack table!
Oh Man ! "gettingby" I wanted to see what you looked like next to "Duck"...
Maybe, you'll find some money under the sofa, mattress, old jacket ....

IMHO unless Tony is one of those people that can't make it (it is his site after all) due to that date I'd say keep it. No matter what date is set people will back out. It is unavoidable. Hopefully others will decide they come. The very first meet and greet will most likely be light. If we do it every year it will gain momentum. Unless T can't make it we have more then enough people to make this date the first successfull DF meet and greet.
Don't worry about me, both months are equally busy for me. If more people prefer June, then that's fine. I will work something out. Unfortunately there is no one I can count on or even trust to do my work for me while I'm away.
P.S. I split this thread up to stay on topic. It is important that we find the best dates and not get side track. You will find the other half in chit-chat.

Brion, I understand that people will back out either way. Personally, I'm still surprised the May date ever came in first. It just seems though that we may get a higher turnout over the summer though when school is out. Maybe I'm wrong. The only major difference between the two so far is the temperature. The hotel rates are basically the same and flights look the same. I'm just curious though if people prefer a different date. Since it's still 5 months away at least, we have some time to change things unless people have gotten ansy and booked stuff already. At which point I won't make any changes then.

Kevin, the May date came in first because some people are more sensitive to the 104 degree (F) temps that summer brings with it.
That was a BIG reason for it coming in first, but it depends on the activities being done. I know that Carwy & I would NOT participate in the golf (because 1, it's boring to us & 2, he canNOT be in the sun that da** long after having had TBI). On such a day, we could do stuff with other members...that is, providing we're able to make it.

All I have to say is pick a date and I'll try to make it. I'm open. Also Dewey with the help of sun block I can spend a little time outside just not much.
JediSkipdogg
12-10-2006, 06:07 PM
I think the most time spent outside during the day will be going between hotels. Or walking from one end of the strip to the other. And even then, one can make it from one end to the other with minimal outsideness. I too don't like the sun. I tried to say I was allergic to it, but that doesn't ever seem to work as a doctor's note to not do something. Yet, for some reason I love golfing, go figure. LOL

Don't get me wrong. I love being outside & swimming & all that, but since Carwy did the TBI, I've been watching my Ps & Qs more closely in terms of sun exposure. :( That's why minimal sun exposure would be best...of course, 20 minutes of sun per day is a good thing, but just need to be careful. :nerd:
I do hope to make it & am relatively open for now...

Either one works for me as well. I do prefer to stick with the original date, but will go with the majority. It felt like we were moving backwards again, but I think I was wrong. I have also been working on a javascript clock that countdowns the time until the trip :). Also would have been nice to see who voted as people that aren't going anyhow can vote.

At this point it's still too early for me to know, so I really don't care on the date and have no real reason to vote for changing or keeping May 13th. I won't know for another few months at the very least. I think because it's still so far out, the group who says they can go now could likely be a very different group by May!

It does look like June is winning. HOwever, before I go forth with officially changing it......
Can the two people that voted NO please PM me and explain why? Is it a personal conflict or something else? Anyone else can PM me any other reasons to not change it as well. I just want to get the date 100% set and not hurt anyone's feelings. I should have the final decision by the end of this week.

That's why I want to really keep it open when we get to that point. I don't want to say at this time we are doing this followed by this and then this. I'm not making a diabetes boot camp, lol. Once we get to planning I just plan on maybe planning a breakfast or dinner somewhere. Maybe a trip somewhere. Then the rest will be open. People can make plans the night before of where they want to go together and it can either be all of us or 5 little groups.

I have the same feeling. I may come out for the whole week, I may just do a couple days. And either way, I might be likely to bring my b/f, my sister and BIL too, so I'll spend a bit of my time with the DF fam and the rest with my other fam. :D

Yes, the date is being changed to....
June 24-June 29
As for me booking yet. I may book my hotel this week. All most require is a downpayment of 1 night and that is full refundable if you cancel at least 48 hours before. I think I'll be staying at the Excalibur and I'll have two queen beds, so if anyone wants to share and split the hotel room cost some let me know.
As for flight, I'm not sure. **** bankruptcies and mergers have me kinda worried. And flight tickets are generally not refundable unless you pay for that option upfront which costs alot more.

I booked my ticket and hotel. I'll be there the June 23'rd (Friday) to June 28 (Wednesday) and got a suite. I am going on the 23rd because my soon to be brother-in-law is having a bachelor party Friday night.
I am booking a golf game through Desert Pines and get a free club rental. I'll be bringing my clubs so Kev if you want to use them or anyone else please let me know. I gotta get in a round out there.
I also got tickets to the titanic museum thing. Which now looks pretty lame in hindsight, but it and the shark reef at mandalay bay were not much extra when booking through expedia and anything to detour me from gambling is good.
God please let me win out there cause I really need to cover my costs on this! If I do loose give me the strength to not believe "I can make it back".

I have my hotel all booked, still searching for a flight. I haven't looked at events to do but I'm hoping to see at least one show and go to one nightclub. I think if I do a show it won't be till I get there and go to the coke bottle (it's a ticket booth where any last minute tickets if available are sold at 50% off.)
Brian, on the golf thing, when do you plan on playing? Depending on what time of day you plan on I may or may not play. Just because of the rates. And yes, I won't mind the heat, I'll just bring a sport bottle and drink 20 gallons of water.

I haven't made the tee time yet, I just got the voucher at a discounted rate through expedia. I need to call to get the tee time. I was thinking monday morning around 8<?>.
Any other golfers want to play? Be great to have a foursome.

I won't do 8 am but I'll do anytime after noon (the rates for me would be 50% cheaper then.) LOL. That and I can't figure out how we'd book that. From what I can tell one person has to book it all. I'm totally confused at their system and how you would fit in with your expedia ticket.
I would play golf with guys but I never played. Although I did play mini-golf a couple years ago and got beat by a woman. I was very happy for her.

Your going on Vacation! You shouldn't worry about much it costs. Look how much you are saving by traveling alone, you don't have to pay for your spouse.

But this is Vegas where everything is overpriced. 8 AM golf will be $75 for me. Noon will be $50 and after 2 would be $40. Heck, around here I won't even pay over $20 for a round, hence why I only play a dozen times a year.

I think this is Tony's way of just trying to play with the girls rather then the guys. ;)

I guess you won't be getting any free buffets :)
How bout discounts to attractions? HEHEHE
I will be bringing my coupon binder. Yes, I have a binder with coupons for various places in the United States. I just never know when I may end up there.
Well first off 8am for golf is way to early, unless your trying to beat the heat or something.
Second I much rather play with the girls, because this is something I don't get to do very day.:D
Oh! And what the heck is a coupon?

So out of all of you who've booked hotels, which ones did you go for? It'd be nice to be in the same area but then, I'm also a frugal gal and I'm still looking around for the best deal without the possibility of being mugged. :D I'm just looking at hotels on vegas.com and it's listing the Stratosphere at $41/night for Sun/Mon/Tues nights. That's a strip hotel, right? (location, not clothing status!)
Though it is all still up in the air for me whether I even go or not, I suppose I could still go ahead and book the hotel. (My plans for an adventure trip to Puerto Rico or some other exotic destination are currently competing for my money and vacation time). But for a LV trip, I'm thinking I would drive down there. Would anybody be up for an outdoorsy hike or anything of that nature? I know it'd be hot, it'd have to be an early morning thing. I would also be down with mini golf! But I should probably wait until I get my stuff in order and make up my mind before I start suggesting activities. :o

I booked my room at Harrahs "Paris". I asked for a room over looking the Bellagio fountains. Puerto Rico is fun. I went packing in the rain forests there and played on the beaches. The lush plant and animal life is pretty cool. The vegas desert is a complete 180 :) .

Jen, I do hope to see you there. Currently I'm booked at The Orleans and very reasonable. It's about a mile west of the strip and I think it has free bus service to the strip. If not, then you can get a CAT bus pass for $5 for the day and as far as I can tell you can then use all of their routes in that day. So you can use it on the route 201 (Orleans to Strip) and then the Deuce route (up and down the strip.)
Right now the plans are not set but should be coming soon. Or at least a huge list of events. I for one will be doing this....
Playing golf with Brian
Playing cards with whoever wants to for cookies (can't say we are playing for money, lol)
Seeing Celine Dion (this is her last year there and maybe last year performing)
As for the rest it's way in the open. I think it mainly depends on who we all have going and when they will be arriving. As we get closer I'll ask for more info from people and then see when we can plan a dinner together and maybe some other minor activities. I'm not going to book us solid because no offense, although I want to meet peope here, I don't want to see you my entire vacation. After all, I do get you all 16 hours a day on here, lol.
Oh yeah, where the heck is Minigolf out there?

I have an activities list that I'm working on which includes some of the popular shows, attractions and so forth along with costs and length of the shows. I'm not feeling good right now so it'll be posted probably by Wednesday.
I would encourage other suggestions as well in case I missed something or if you know about a particular item on the list please share your opinions on whether it would be best to visit or best to pass on it. This can apply to people that aren't even attending also.
