My daughter was just diagnosed last monday at the tiny age of six! I was diagnosed in March this year type I, and my father was type I at the same onset age!! Isn't that a little strange that my daughter is dx 9 months after me?? I am scared to death to have such a young child with this horrible disease. We are both on tiny doses of Novolog 1:80. What are the chances of that!? Is there anyone here that has this bad of genetics with multiple type I's in the family?

I am the only T1 in my family, tho there are multiple T2s.
However, I was 7 when i got it (am almost 31 now!). It may seem scary for you now, but it will lessen over time.
I know others on here got diabetes at even younger ages, so maybe they can provide some more insights.....

My mother was type 1
me type 1
dad type 2
sister type 2
so dont listen to ppl that say type 1 isnt as genetic as type 2, it can be.

Have you considered MODY? There is a study now where they are looking for families with diabetes in three generations:
children with DIABETES - Joslin MODY Study (http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/studies/JoslinMODY.htm)
Sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis.
I'm the 4th generation type 1 diabetic.
I always thought it was 3 generations but talking to my Mum the other day I had a great great Uncle who died before insulin was discovered :)
I was diagnosed aged 4 1/2.
Don't worry about your daughter she will accept her diabetes a lot better than you as she is so young.
Best wishes

I am the only type 1 in 3 generations on my mothers and fathers side. Not type 2's. 3 Friends I have that I am pretty close with with diabetes are also in similar situations.
It is quite a coincidence with the onsets. Sorry to read about that. On the bright side though, at least you can know better what your daughter is going through. Most parents, even they do great, awesome jobs (like my parents did :) ) can't really know what their children are going through with diabetes, but you can.

was going to say the same thing, have you considered MODY as a possibility? both being on very small amounts of insulin is also a characteristic that can point to MODY.
How is your daughter reacting? is she handling the diagnosis well? best wishes to you both

Actually from an immunology point of view this could be quite interesting. It sounds like both you and your daughter were genetically predisposed to developing diabetes and the fact that you have both developed the condition within such a small time frame suggests that there must be some sort of external trigger - such as a virus that you both caught.

wasn't there another story about three guys who were in the same college class getting type1 all within 3 or 4 months of each other?

My sister is the only one who doesn't have it now... my dad an I are both T1and my mum has just been diagnosed with T2.
T2 runs on my mums side of the family but my dad (and his identical twin) are the 1st on his that we know of for a looooong time!

This might be scary, but the good thing is u will be able to educate her better now that u've had experience with it.
My dad was type 1 and i know it made a huge difference. he got it age 5 and was very much alive, he managed to get the education he wanted, was very hard working, had a great family and such amazing kids ;-) lol.
Ur daughter will benefit from much better treatment that my dad did, so dont be scared, just try to find so positive influence from this challenge, ok?
the fact that u r on injection might also help her because she will see her mum doing it. you can do the shots in some game-like way, that will reassure her.
For the rest of the family, my sis is at risk, my bro is fine, there are some other type 1s on my dad's side i heard.

I am the only type one in our family. My grandmother was type 2 as was one of her children (my mother's brother).
I have often wondered how I got so lucky. Would be nice to know if there is ANYTHING that can predict who will get type one as I have five children and I worry.

I worry about my grandchildren. I am type 1 and my gran (on my dad's side) was type 2. My mother's sister was type 2 also. I know of no other diabetics in our family. I am I suspect my mom was before she died but was not dx. I am an only child. I wish I knew how to predict why and how this happens, too. I have one granddaughter I am keeping an eye on. She has had some symptoms ever so often. But not all the time. Scares me to death to think I passed it on to one of them. All my family members didn't (including myself) didn't have it until we were older but I know it can happen early on, too. I pray everyday that they don't get it. But atleast I know now what to look for. Good luck!

I will say a prayer for her (and you)
My father had type1 , too. We were both dx'ed at the same age. We shared our diabetes stories, etc...
what a bond, even though it took him.

I can't trace any form of Diabetes to any of my family members. Not saying then never went untreated, but I could not find any history what so ever in my family.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation! I always feel so sorry for the little ones - I can't imagine telling them that they have to take needles everyday for the rest of their lives! :bawling: You should look into getting insulin pumps - you only change the site every three days - way better than needles everyday! Good luck to you and your daughter!

So sorry to hear about that...
My daughter was 6 when dx'd(she is 13 now)...now, I am going on Wednesday morning for a glucose tolerance test(3 hour)...b/c my hypoglycemia is becoming a lot more frequent. I don't think I have diabetes, but Eri seems to find this quite interesting.
The good thing is the two of you can go through this together.(I think that's why Eri is thinking my testing is so interesting).
The pump is a great idea as well.
As for diabetes in the family...my dad is a T2, found out my great aunt was as well.(dads side). Eri's dad MAY be a T2 as well...although the docs believe the steroids he was on while in the hospital(and out) for the double pneumonia were responsible for his bs to rise.
Also, his brother is a T2(dx'd this time last year I believe) and I think someone on his dads side as well(T2). No clue as to his moms side. I do know that there is none on my mom's side.

My son was dx'd at the tender age of 7. No history of diabetes in our family. It was quite a whirlwind at the onset but in time it became second nature. Now he is almost 13 and manages most of his own stuff. Although you may not think so, right now, you already have the tools needed to allow your little one to grow and achieve good control. God bless.

Hi, :wavey: I'm Very sorry to hear that your Sweet Daughter
was dxd. and yourself, of course. That is odd that you's were
dxd. that close together. It still seems to be up in the air as
far as what the actual cause is for each Family. Hereditary,
environmetal, viral.....
We had 3/4 Kids in my Family with Type 1, my Cousins Kids(3/3).
No one else we know of still, from before with Type 1 in either
Families. Agreed, if they had it, no one knew what it was. They
may have been dxd. with some other cause of death. Autopies
were apparently not done much at all in Canada, back then.
Well, at least you have more knowledge than my Parents did.
(God love Them). Best Wishes to you's both.

When you consider that since the discovery of insulin, us type 1's are no longer dying off before bearing children. That fact limited the spread of this diseaso somewhat. Now we are passing it on and spreading the gene around more. We're gonna need that cure.

I'm the same as you Jeggeman, although my uncle has recently been Dx'd,but that is years after i was and is more down tohis diet and lifestyle.
Kel4han don't worry about it,you're little girl will be fine as long as you don't panic.Try and get her to do her own injections as soon as poss and as others have said if you make it a game she'll accept it.Also make sure you all test at the same time, seeing her family do it too will reasure her.

I have always had the attitude that I am one of the lucky ones. (I too was diagnosed at a very early age (1.5 years), and there is no diabetes on either side of the tree.) Thus, I have never known any other way. It would be terrible to have to make such a HUGE adjustment later in life. For the longest time I just thought that everyone was taking shots. I have never let my diabetes keep me from doing anything. I played all the sports in high school, hiked mountains, traveled through Latin America, and now we have a little girl that keeps me on my toes, as well as keeping me motivated to stay in good control. I just hope she didn’t get that crappy gene. This way you can create good habits and hopefully stay with them. After all Diabetes is just a slight inconvenience and nothing more.
