Hello, I am Jessica Fitz and I am 16 years old.
On Nov 30th/2006 I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I had a lot of symptoms like; very thirsty, always going to the bathroom, losing unexpected weight, head aches.. and just not feeling well. I put the symptoms off for a week, until I could barely go for 5 minutes without drinking a bottle of water.
My mother brought me to the doctors and i explained to him my symptoms and he just turned around and said "Yup. You have Diabetes!" I was in utter shock, and I was holding back the tears.
The doctor immediately sent me to the hospital, and I was there for six days. I caught on to the whole needle & sugar testing area because my grandmother has type 2 Diabetes, and I give her.. her needles.
The first couple of days were just a total shock, but I accepted it, and here I am!
I take 4 needles a day. I am on Nova-Rapid & Levemir. I also use the pen, they are great & easy to use!
I would love to get to know a lot of people on here, in hopes to hear other peoples experiences.. because someone really doesn't know what it feels like to be a Diabetic.. without taking needles & testing your blood.
Take care,
Jessica Fitz

Hi Jessica, and welcome.
My son is in grade 9, diagnosed for just over a year now. It's a crummy thing to have happen, the upside being, of course, that once you know what's wrong with you and how to take care of yourself you feel a whole lot better. It sounds like you're doing really well already in adjusting to your "new life."
Good luck, I hope things continue to go OK for you.

Welcome Holly.
You sound just like me 31 years ago, except the parts about the pen and insulins and blood testing. A lot has changed in that time.
Stick with it! It's now a part of your life to control this thing, and it's not rocket science.
Rock on!

Hi Jessica, I'm quite new on here too but I've been a Type 1 for nearly 13 years. This forum is great, I have found so much useful info from the guys in here. If you have any questions at all, don't be afraid to ask!
All the best, Sarah.
Hi Jessica, Welcome to the Forum.:shakehand You'll learn a lot here and if you have any questions you want answered just ask and they will be answered for sure. Your situation is almost identical to mine a long long time ago when I was 13. It is a shock but whatever you do stick to what's right for you so that you will avoid trouble later on in life. You will get used to doing things right and it will become easier for you. The more you control your blood sugars the better you'll feel and the less problems you will encounter in years to come. I wish you well Jessica and you have started off on the right foot.
Hiya Jessica!! You sound like a mature and sensible young lady, so I'm sure you'll do really well with diabetes. I have a 16 year old son, and I KNOW if he were diagnosed now, he'd hit the roof, cuz he hates needles! He's in 11th grade--are you also?? I was diagnosed when I was 13, and that was in 1966--so I've been a type 1 diabetic for 41 years, one of the longest on this board. Although you will find it to be a trial at times, my feeling from this long into it is that because of the ways it has caused me to behave and to think--to be purposeful, disciplined, optimistic, self-reliant, resourceful, mature and resilient--I have lived a BETTER life and become a better person for having lived my life with diabetes. I feel that, although it has been a battle, it has also been a gift, keeping me aware of the preciousness, beauty and fragility of life.
Welcome to the club, glad to have ya aboard!
Michael

i'm 16 years old as well and was recently diagnosed (September 06). The first few days were the roughest for me until i realized that i am the exactly the same person i was before and can do the same things i could do prior to diagnosis. you definitely have come to the right place to help you take control and get support.
