View Full Version : Shorting Out Pump

Is there anyone here that is having trouble with their pump shorting out??? I am on my 4th Minimed 508 pump and I am concerned about this. Minimed said I seem to be attracting electricity. I wear the pump in the static cover always.
I get no alarm and when I go to bolus, the pump goes completely dead--Nothing will work. 2 days ago--I got a low battery--I had to change the battery 4 times in one day---that is 12 batteries--my hubby checked the batteries before they were put in and they were fine (he has a meter to do this) and then he checked them after I put them in and when I touched the act key--I got a signal of low battery--he checked them again and they were dead----then the pump shorted out and would not work but there was NO alarm.
What can I do--I no longer wear nylons, silk, etc etc and I walk bare foot on my carpet--we thought of taking the carpet out and putting in all wood floors but this happens everywhere--even camping. HELP

Gina Thank You
Gee--If I wear metal shoes then I won't have to spike my hair LOL
I will have to wait for the paradigm or the other new one but am trying to get things straightened out. I think they know there is a problem and I am hoping to get it resolved somehow--I bought a new perfume at the store this morning--Static guard...Oh Me

I don't use a pump, but I've seen a few newsgroup posts from people who do. One mentioned finding that a battery he bought was bad, all others shipped to the same store in the same box were also about as bad, but when he managed to get a battery from a different box things went back to normal. Do you think you might be partway through finding you're in the same situation?

Gina,
You speak very highly about your Minmed Paradigm pump, however, have you ever experienced problems with the double AA batteries going dead and losing your pump history? In addition, the insulin resevoir is plastic, and I am told by reps that this can result in bubbles and that there is an additional cost to replace the 170ml resevoir. Did you ever look at purchasing from Anamas or Disetronic? If not, why not?

Dreamartist, have you tried putting a piece of used antistatic dryer sheet in your pump case? Ive seen many posts that its solved their static problem. Is your case the one with the gold inside? Its supposed to be the more antistatic one. Goodluck.

Sooey at that time i wrote to dream artist about the minimed 508 and was thinking of going on the paradigm...i now have the paradigm for almost two months now and the batteries do go dead after like two weeks or so...its kind of annoying...actually being on the pump itself is getting on my nerves!! im going through some phase...where i dont want to be bothered being attached to this stupid thing anymore...but then i think of all of the advantages it has also, and they outweigh the bad things...it would be great to not be connected anymore...i dont know im debating about going back on shots...someone will talk me out of it though!! does anyone else have these similar problems ever....or am i just absolutely nutts>>>

Hi Gina!

I know exactly what you're talking about. I've only been on the MM508 since February of this year, and I already have those feelings. But, like you, I think of how much better my BG's and A1C are and I think I need to get over it. but here's what I do: About every 6 weeks or so, when it's time to change the infusion set, I take a "pump vacation." I go back to shots for a day or two...usually over the weekend. I had been on shots for so long that they're not a big deal to me and it's a nice change of pace. Maybe this will help you too!
