I was only kept overnight... I had no insurance at the time, and so received a real crash course in Diabetes 101... not really an ideal situation :s:. Ah well, guess I survived! :dontknow:

Never....they thought I was type 2 so they gave me oral meds and the exchange diet and told me to get my act together. When I was dx'ed as type 1 a year and a half later he wanted to hospitalize me, but I refused.

I was in the hospital about a week. Getting diabetes and being in that hospital is my earliest [clear] memory. I tried to run away from the hospital one night. I kept telling my parents to leave so at night I could walk home. Good thing the security gaurd caught me :) .

My Oldest Brother(dxd. @ 4 1/2)was given too much Insulin
and had quite a few seizures while in the Hospital.

My Youngest Brother(dxd. @ 4) and I(dxd. @ 3) did not go to
the Hospital. Our Family Dr. refused to send us there because
of my Oldest Brother's experience.

I was in for 6 days I think on paediatric ward, I wasn't exactly 'ill' though, although my glucose was off the scale, above 45mmol/L. I never had a drip or anything

This is a long story now so sit back (long, as in 48 years ago). In the last century when I was a young boy and was diagnosed I spent 6 weeks in hospital and left the hospital not even knowing fully what I had. I think I still don't. He! He!. I think things have improved a little since then. A couple of years later I was hospitalised with severe hyperglycaemia (unconscious) and spent 4 weeks "detained" in hospital. After that I just decided this is not for me, so I started looking after myself for a change. Every other time was as a result of hypos or sports injuries, but no hypers.

No hospital time. At the age of 24 (now 45) I had "the symtoms" and used my diabetic sister's meter to check. Read 320. Went to the doc and said I think I'm diabetic. He said " Well , just watch what you eat for a MONTH and we will see how you do"..............Got another doctor and some treatment.

I was brought to the hospital from school for stomach pains, which turned out to be acute appendicitis--perforated, soon to rupture. As I was being prepped for surgery, they found my glucose to be over 900, and deemed me too sick to operate on until my sugar level came down. By then I was already in a coma, and then the appendix burst, sending me into septic shock. So they had to operate. I was in a coma for 3 days, and in critical care for a week. Altogether, I spent about a month in the hospital, but that was recovering from the surgery, the septicemia, the coma, and the malnourishment and dehydration that many months of undiagnosed diabetes had caused--I had gone from a robust 120 lbs at my 13th birthday to an emaciated 65 lbs six months later at my hospital admission. In 1966, the combination of symptoms I came in with was very much a toss-up as far as life and death were concerned--somehow I pulled through. I didn't even know about the diabetes for a couple of weeks...!

I was in the hospital for about 5 or 6 hours (emergency room), where I received my first insulin dose (regular, unknown quantity) and was arranged an appointment with a endocrinologist the following day (one that I'm still with today--she's great!).

The following day confirmed the Type 1 dx. I had my first self-administered shot in the office, and was told to eat within 20 minutes of leaving the office.

Once I got home, I performed my first glucose test (it took me an hour to prepare myself for it.) It was somewhere in the 200's... and knowing this was a "bad thing," immediately called the endo's office to ask what I should do.

The new receptionist told me to hold, and then came back 20 seconds later and said, "Uhh... go to the hospital."

I was back in the hospital for 4 hours, receiving more IV's. They consulted with my endocrinolgist, who was shocked that I returned to the hospital, stating that I could have called and asked her what to do.

That second ER visit cost me another $5.5K out-of-pocket. All because of a new, clueless office receptionist.

At the time, I thought I would have to go to the ER every time my glucose went out of "normal" range.

I had no diabetes classes (no insurance at the time), and luckily, found forums like this to be my education tool. At my 1-month follow-up appointment, I knew to ask for the basal/bolus kind of insulin... that 70/30 stuff was a nice way of being initiated into the d-club! :tomato:

I think this experience also taught me that I can't depend on anyone but myself to decide what actions to take for correcting glucose levels.

when i was diagnosed i spent half a day in hospital, that was in 2000, earlier this year in april i spent a week in hospital because of high readings (not DKA), i was released with a different type of oral med, then a couple of weeks later when that failed to work they wanted to admit me again to start insulin, i refused and spent an hour with the diabetes nurse, learning all i needed, coming away with all my equiptment and haven't looked back since

At diagnosis 0.

The prednisolone brought my diabetes out early! I was diagnosed by GTT ( ---->:puke: feels sorry for anyone who has to take that test!!!). Started on oral meds (confusion about type – was told probably T1 d/t weight loss, T2 because of age, slow onset T1, T1 honeymoon phase).

I only got worse after being diagnosed. Three weeks later Mum had to take me to hospital on a Friday night, got transferred to a larger hospital and was discharged on Tuesday afternoon.

Had to go back to hospital the same week Dad took me in on a Thursday evening and home first thing Monday morning.

Was in emergency overnight early November and early October too.

Have had few probs since switching to lantus + novorapid!:elefant:

I never was admitted. I was 16 and went to my ped and was dx, who sent me to a de gave me R insulin and a one touch basic monitor and sent me on my way. I swear after all the weight I lost and how weak I felt I swore I was going anemic from all the blood the old one touch took.

I was in for around 4-5 days. I was under 100 lbs when i entered the hospital and friends, I felt like I was truly going to die. Like the life was rapidly going out of me. I believe that my HB1AC was 13 or 14 .I so remember being upset that I was diabetic and starting injections and so on. They gave me too much and suffered a low of 38 on late night during my stay. Now I have learned how to adjust and it's like a part of me--managing the diabetes.

Eri was never admitted when dx'd. We had a 4 hour crash course at the endo's office.
Unfortunately, there have been many hospital stays since then(only ONE in FL...somewhere around 7 up here).

I never went and stayed at the hospital. My PCP kept me in her little office all day and gave the the crash course; I had an 8:30 AM appt for "not feeling too well". Sent me home at about 5:00 PM with Novolin-R, a FreeStyle meter and her cell phone number.

She said she normally would send a patient to the hospital for something like this, but it was Friday, she said all the NEW interns were starting their rotations at the hospital and she didn't want to subject me to that. I made it through the weekend and went back and saw her Monday morning.

I love my PCP.

It was about 4 or 5 days for me. I was taken to the emergency room first--it turned out my blood glucose was at least one thousand. (Eek.) They'd wanted me to stay for at least a full week, but when they saw how sad I was when they announced that, they decided to let me go home and to come back the next day for a check-up. My blood sugar actually stopped being high the the night I came home, so it all worked out for the best.

I am a odd ball for you. I was diagnosed 63 years ago and I was in the hospital for six weeks. That was how they did it at that time but they sure taught you a lot more than they do now. Of course didn't have any of the better way of doing things.

I was in the hospital for 5 days, went to the ER , because I was feeling like crud. Blood sugar was over 600 and they admitted me and told/showed me what I needed to do. I kept having to tell the nurses at every shift change that I was a new diabetic and had not given myself a shot yet, everytime they came in with insulin for my shots.

Technically none- I was tentatively diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and sent home with a metformin prescription. So it wasn't until a few hours later, when I got home, that I spoke to the doctor again and found out that I was in DKA and she told me to check into the ER immediately. I went in Friday afternoon, got out Tuesday night with a tentative type 1 diagnosis that the autoantibody tests confirmed.

Hmm I was rushed to emergency by ambulance..and they had no bed for me! Rushed to childrens hospital and placed in ICU for 4 days, 2 drips, no food. All I wanted in those **** four days was some chocolate milk and a croissant..Heh little did I know what was up ahead! I then moved from the ICU to another hospital for around 6 days where they tried to control my levels and gain me some weight...which didnt work very well, I was all skin and bone. So it was around 10 days altogether.

Went to the pediatrcian friday morning. He ordered us a cab (red and white with blinking lights) to take my boy to PICU.
We received a crash course on the basics of MDI. We left Monday night.
I must say though, that the CDE's were there for us at any hour of the day any day.

did prolly 4 days in the gown I remember i was just sitting on the computer and my vision started to grey out, was very confused when it went to almost full black and white (was 27 at the time and almost fresh out of the corps Sooooo i still belived i was invincible) figured it was nothing major (i had no idea (no family history) but once i lost my vision I freaked out ( i have a MAJOR eye fettish nothign can come close to my eye or i lose it) seems i was around 850 or so on the numbers , looking back that was not a good place to be at all.

I seem to have some weird tolerance in some ways, i dont "feel" funny till over 375, another not good thing indeed.

2 nights, 3 days. 4 of the last hours trying to check out. I count that. A1C > 16.5. Night nurses were cute. Kind of want to go back.
