View Full Version : BC pills
For those of you currently on the birth control pill, does it do anything to "smooth" BG fluctuations due to hormones? I have been having difficulty with hormone-related issues and BGs (http://www.diabetesforums.com/type-1/14678-one-women-insulin-resistance.html), and my endo would like me to go back on the pill to see if if helps with hormone fluctuations and erractic cycles.
Also, any opinions on pill brands that you like or hate? The last time I was on it, I had trouble with nausea and moodiness, so I'm a little gun-shy about going back on it...
Thanks for your help!

I have a love/hate relationship with BC pills. For me, it is like trading in one set of hormones and emotions for another. But, my sugars and skin were postively effected. When I'm not on BC, my sugars go crazy during my period and my face breaks out. I was on Yasim. Can't hurt to try it for a few months!

I am currently on Yasmin and still have a great deal of bloodsugar variation at "that time of the month". I'm not even convinced that being on it hasn't made it worse, rather than better.
I used to be on Tricylcen, but I found that if I ever missed a pill or anything, I'd feel SOOOO ill when I had to double-dose. Also, the first couple of days of a new pill pack I'd always be kinda woozy and odd-feeling. The Yasmin is MUCH better for this.

Yasmin was one of the pills that I tried previously and had the same experience as far as BGs go. I think that's part of the reason that I stopped taking it, because my insulin needs were horrendous while taking the "active pills". Ortho Tri-cyclen made me so nauseous, especially the first week or so. There are sooo many formulations of BC pills- how's a girl to choose one that works for her?!?
Thank you all for your feedback and advice- I can use all the help that I can get :)

So your saying that being on BC pills will not hurt your blood sugars? My old endo used to tell me my sugars would be sooo high if i ever went on BC so to stay off it..I really want to go on the pill cause my cycle is bad and i think it could help...but i am worried about my bgs....also is it safe to be on BC and Metformin? ::probably gonna have to ask my doc about that:: and You sure it wont mess up my sugars? cause now during that time of the month my bgs are off the wall....even on the metformin they were higher than normal

Well, any hormones will cause your BGs to vary. But if you have to take extra insulin for natural hormones, why not take extra insulin for synthetic hormones and get a more regular cycle out of the deal? Just my two cents....I'm definitely not a doctor!
My endo is thinking that, in my case, not ovulating may be a good thing as my cycles will be more predictable and hopefully that will make it easier to predict my insulin needs and adjust my pump programming accordingly. We'll see what my family doc thinks...as she is the one who will have to write the BC script...

It's been 15 years since I was on the pill...didn't have D at the time. I took ortho novum 777, and what I remember the most was that I gained 30 pounds within two months of going on them, and it was sooo hard to lose once I got off of them. I never went back on because I had a tubal when my last child was born, but I would consider it if it would do something about these hormone related b/s swings!

Coming in, seeing "birth control", and leaving would be like accidentally walking into the ladies room.
Coming in, seeing "birth control", POSTING, and then leaving is like realizing you're in the ladies room, but relieving yourself anyway...... ;)

but those of you who are on the pill how are your bgs?
I've been on the pill (Levlen ED) since 1999, so I guess I dont really remember much different in the way of bloodsugars. My pill is one of the ones which has the same dose of hormones all month, with the 7 inactive pills. I'm wondering if having this type of pill helps reduce the impact on bloodsugars, as my hormone levels supposedly stays pretty stable for most of the month. I'm wondering if pills with the three different hormone concentrations wouldn't mess with your bloodsugars more than the monophasic ones?
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.. This was the first pill I ever tried, and it has always worked fine for me with no issues at all.

so you think the three different hormone concentrations would be better for the bgs than monophasic ones? i am still confused...i just want to be a little more aware before i go see my doctor in Jan

I'm inclined to think like Diana- that a monophasic pill would make it easier to deal with BGs than a triphasic one would. I have an appointment with my doc next week and this is one of the questions that I plan to ask her. I will post any info that she gives me...

I think I read that you had tried Ortho Tri Cyclen pills before? Well have you tried the Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo variation of those pills? That's what I use and I think they're pretty good. I had a very bad experience on Alesse - absolutely terrible moods!!! - but with the OTC Lo I didn't/don't get any weird mood problems or side effects other than gaining a couple pounds in the first few months. I haven't really noticed any effect on my bg levels either, good or bad. I do notice that the week before my period, I need a bit more insulin, but it was this way before the pill too. It's just predictable now. :D

Not yet. I have my doc appointment in about an hour. Thanks for the info- especially since Alesse was one of the pill brands that I wanted to ask my doc about. It's been a few years but as I recall, other than the nausea, I tolerated OTC well, so maybe OTC Lo will be the answer that I'm looking for!
