I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes no more then a month ago, everything has been going fine until recently. Last night at bedtime my blood sugar reading was 67 so I treated it accordingly, or so I thought, 15 minutes later it was 250. But no big deal right? higher = better then low. So here I am at 7:00 AM feeling messed up, so I check my blood sugar and its 50, how is that possible??

What insulins are you on and when do you take them? That's the key to start figuring out what to do. Also, what other treatment methods do they have you on? Do you know about carb counting.

I take NPH/Novolog in the morning and Novolog/Lantus at night, I know all about carb counting and I'm usually always on time w/ the correct amounts (handy booklet).

You take NPH in the morning -- and Lantus at night?
I will admit that is a combination I have never heard of.
Lantus provides (almost) 24 hour coverage - it covers 22 hours for me. NPH is a different long lasting insulin, and has a "peak" to it.
You might ask your endo why they are having you take 2 different types of long lasting insulin.
As for "why" on your readings, as you go along you will figure out how insulin reacts with your body - so test test test that blood sugar.

Too little information to really say what's going on.
From the little provided, you overtreated the low, and also since your a new diabetic, your body reacted quickly with stress hormone to your low of 67 mg/dl., which helped to spike your sugar back up.
If you aren't already, you may now be hitting the honeymoon period. Quite commonly among type 1 diabetics after getting stabilized, there are some remaining beta cells which regain functionality and start producing insulin. With that happening, along with the presence of injected insulin, hypos occur. Consult your doctor.

Sometimes I've had some sort of sugar residue on my fingers (from eating an apple) that can cause incorrectly high readings. Now I make sure to wipe my finger with alcohol before testing every time. Also if you had something like a soda to raise your sugar it will go up very fast.

This is a very, very important detail that we all need to keep in mind when testing...make sure the test site is not contaminated.

I've seen that on here a couple of times, so I started washing my hands real well before testing and I've been getting consistently lower readings now, especially in the morning.
I was still running a little high before. Now that I'm washing the hands first, my tests are coming in right on target.

Alcohol is easier since it dries faster (& it's more portable).

Plus if you find yourself bored with nothing to do, you can always drink it.

Sometimes people go on Lantus as their (primary) basal, and use NPH in the morning so that they don't have to take a shot at lunch time. It's generally a very ineffective method of managing diabetes.

There I go, a medical reason to keep a bottle of Vodka in my desk... for sanitizing purposes. :-)

It's a common trend for Type1 diabetics to go low at night. What I would suggest is that you perhaps take food with a low Glycaemic Index (GI) before bed. You would also be at situation where you will be only learning what the correct doses are, and are therefore in the experimental stages. It will take a bit of trial and error before you can feel you have mastered it. It takes a bit of time to learn everything but joining this Forum will help you greatly. What's happening has almost without doubt happened to all Type1's. I would suggest that you read extensively about your illness, and keep posted here, where you will learn a great deal. Ask any questions you may have, no matter how insignificant you may feel they are, and the chances are that you will get plenty of support and advise.
