Hi!!
I was wondering if anybody has ever tried acupuncture?
At the moment I’m in a great pain (burning in my whole body and pain in my hands, feet and ankles, and doctors don’t know what it is). It has something to do with nerves even though no neuropathy was found. I heard acupuncture can help, but I’m not sure about it. Did anybody ever try it? Does it help for this or any other kind of pain?

Thank you for your feedback !!

I've never tried it Kat, but I think you should explore every avenue in order to get rid of this pain. Have you called an acupuncturist and talked about the benefits?

I've never had a need to try it. But it sounds like you're in awful pain, and I don't think accupuncture would make it any worse would it? I say it's definitely worth looking into.

Hope you can find a solution,
HeatherP

Hi Kat,

Have you tried chiropractic? I have been under treatment for nearly 20 years now and it has helped me with chronic pain. Some of the chirpractors in my area offer a wide range of options including acupuncture. What I particularly like about chiropractors is that in most cases, if they can't help you they will tell you up front. They don't dope you up and string you along.

Another option might be a Doctor of Osteopathy.

Good luck,

Travis

Thank you all for your replies.
Well, I didn’t try anything yet, they sent me to the pain clinic and I just got Neurontin. I’m taking it for a month now- 2400mg a day which is really big dose, and no help whatsoever ! I’m taking so many pain killers they make me nauseous and I can’t eat anymore. The pain killers don’t really help much !
What does chiropractor do? I thought they all do acupuncture lol
I heard acupuncture can help with the pain, but I don’t know how many sessions do you have to do? Does anybody know?

Kat,

Another option might be a Doctor of Osteopathy.

Give the acupuncture a try. If it works, it's worth it.

This is the one place where I agree with Travis about Drs.
While I'm one of those who wouldn't send anyone to a Bone Cracker,(because of my experiences as a coach) I do recommend Ostreopaths because they are trained in Holistic Medicine. They into account the entire body--yes they can do all the things a regular Md. can but, they can also do the "Bone Cracker" things and they are trained to use the body's natural healing properties.

They are chiropractors with Real Dr. training.

Sorry, Travis, prejudicial bias on my part. I've seen too many athletes ruined by chiropractors not sending the kids to a MD soon enough.

So are you saying chiropractors are not trained as M doc's?

They have some training--not full Medical training but enough to cover what they're attempting to do.

There are indeed Good Ones, as Travis pointed out, who admit their limits and send you to real Dr. as needed.

My experience, however, is that many will allow their egos to let them push beyond what they were taught and experiment--this is one of those situations where if you find one that people You Trust recommend them, then give it a shot.

Nope, they're not. They can't even write prescriptions.

I'm a bit doubtful of chiro's. While I think that there are some conditions in which it may be helpful, they can't always cure everything. Take for example, my mom-in-law - she believes that when she gets a cold, it's because her spine is "out of alignment". So she goes to the chiro, and he's willing to treat her! Can you imagine? One thing about chiro's, they do want you to come in 2-3x week indefinitely, so look into it, but be a bit skeptical. I'm sure there are good ones out there, but there's also some real quacks.

I’m confused now?? Who will then do the acupuncture? I thought only chiropractors do it? Does anyone else practice acupuncture too? Is there only acupuncturist but not chiropractor? I thought that's a package lol

Kat I know what your going tho. Not to long ago I had back pain. Went to the doctor went to the pain clinic. No one could figure out what was going on. I then went to the chiropractic. My doctor didn't believe in them so he wouldn't give me a referral. With 25 dollars a pop 3x a week. I couldn't afford to much. But she didn't help me. But you know I would of tried anything if it would help. I think you should try all of it. I never did find out what was causeing my back pain. It just went away. Now I'm doing exerise to make my back stronger hopeing it won't happen again.

It seems like there was a guy from Florida on here a while back trying to get people to help him do a study on the effects of acupuncture on diabetes.

Chiropractors can help, but they can also make things worse. I recently learned a lot about them, because I was going to one after my car accident last July.

When I first started going to him, I couldn't stand up straight, and I couldn't lie down in a bed. After a few weeks of going to him, I was finally able to straighten up. Then he took an x-ray of my neck. He diagnosed me with whiplash and started adjusting my neck. I think he caused more problems than he fixed. My hands were going numb at night, and my neck always hurt. This went on for several months, and I finally quit going. He was trying to milk workmens comp for all they had, and it wasn't helping me. About a week after I stopped going, my neck started feeling better.

Since this experience, I have found that there are several different types of chiropractors. A good place to learn more about them is http://www.quackwatch.org/. They have information on all of the different types of alternative medicine. There is a section on how to tell the good ones from the bad. In the case of the chiropractors, if they claim that they can cure illnesses and conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or even the common cold, you should avoid them. If they talk about "subluxations", that is a warning sign also. A subluxation is an invisible problem with your spine that only a chiropractor can diagnose by running his fingers along your spine. It will not show up on an x-ray, or by any other means. In other words, it doesn't really exist.

Good luck!

Hi all,

Opinions range wide and far on chiropractors. Sometime ago, I had the opportunity to do some research into the amount of training that fully licensed doctors of chiropractic receive. The amount of anatomy and physiology they study is approximately twice that of an MD.

There are some peculiar claims out there. I don't necessarily go along with the idea that spinal adjustment can cure a cold. I did have a sinus condition that my MD had told me to take an otc decongestant to treat. The condition caused intense sharp pain in the region of my left ear. Each time the pain would hit I would flinch. My chiropractor noticed it during a regular visit. He made a slight, painless, adjustment to my neck and the pain subsided. It did not and has not returned. Each time I treated with the decongestant, I received temporary relief, if any.

Kat, before you let anyone manipulate your spine or stick needles in parts of your anatomy, talk to some patients. Find someone who has been treated by the practitioner. If you don't like what you see or hear, go someplace else.

Good suggestions, Travis, I think that could help Katjic to speak to his previous patients.

Travis, it sounds like you probably have a good chiropractor. If he can fix a problem with one adjustment. Mine adjusted me three times a week for 7 months. He would still be working on me if I let him. He was "literally" a "pain in the neck"!

HEY GUYS !!

I just made apointment to se acupuncturist. Apointment is on monday morning.
i'll let you all know how did it go !

Jon,

My chiroprator is nearly 70. His father, brothers, nephews and one of his sons are chiropractors. I drive 40 miles one-way to see him, bypassing any number of other chiropratic offices. I would be reluctant to allow anyone else to work on my spine.

Unfortunately, every field has some quacks and crooks. You may have hit upon one of those. I like getting paid for my work, but it isn't all about the money. If it were I would have gone someplace else long ago. Too bad some of the folks offering chiropractic treatments don't feel that way.

Acupuncturists work on the bodies pressure points to heal just as Shiatsu Massage and Foot Reflexology does.

I have tried Shiatsu and Foot Reflexology a lot and it works for me. I have no numbness in my feet and have restored function of an autonomic neuropathy in my hands after 43 of type 1 diabetes.
Surgery couldn't even repair an autonomic neuropathy so I was quite fortunate, as it's hard to work when your right hand keeps losing control when writing.

If the problem is a neuropathy you might look at alpha lipoic acid or some other nutrients that help neuropathies as well.

I have also used a chiropractor and he's a medical doctor as well so there are a few with MD licenses.

Keep us informed on what worked for you.
