Anyone else not need a basal insulin? I know most of you will say you must have a basal, but my daughter and I, I believe are both in out "honeymoon" We cant put her to bed under 150 on just .5 levemir. I cant go to bed under 200, but crash on 1:40 novolog becuase I am too sensitive. It last 5 hours for me. Any suggestions from those that experienced weird honeymoons I would appreciate your thoughts.

I didn't need basal insulin for about 2 months, then my need for it hit with a boom.

I started with bolus-only at 1u Humalog for 30g for several months...can't remember how long actually. Honeymoon ended eventually.
After 6 years, I am currently doing about 30u basal + bolus at 1:10.
I just use rapid acting 1:8..I rarely eat more than 30g carb per meal often 10-20 and eat cheese as a snack between meals ..I use smarties in two's when I exercise and usually can finish a hike at about 5.6.....only time I have to be careful with dropping low is when exercising or very busy days at work. I did 2 yrs ala Bernstein with no insulin. I am still seeing my insulin needs rising, so expect I might have to add something else one day soon..but I go to bed in the 4's and most days wake up in the 4's..however once in a whlie I am waking up in the high 5's...my fasting sugars have settled right down tho' since having mealtime shots.
This thread interests me greatly - my honeymoon is still going quite strong, almost 3 years now, but bs are rising slowly over the last 2 months. Not using insulin yet. I expected to start bolus insulin as the honeymoon fades, but the endo says get the basal right first......
Fasting bs vary from 6.5 to 8, 2 hour pp anything from 7.5 to 10 (I have a fairly strict low carb eating plan). What's the general experience of other LADA types here - did you start bolusing as the honeymoon faded, or go straight onto "standard model" control of basal and bolus?

I think standard is adding basal first because with one shot a day you get some kind of coverage all day long.
I was dx'ed in September, and started insulin in February. My post-prandials were the real problem, so, that, among other reasons, was the reason I started bolus first. As soon as a saw an endo who knew what he was doing though, I was on basal too.

I think standard is adding basal first because with one shot a day you get some kind of coverage all day long. I knew my endo must've been a non-conformist, but then again there was no lantus or levimir when i started.

I recently found out by accident that I can (at least sometimes) go without the basal. Trouble is, unless I get the evening meal bolus exactly right, I will stay high all night. Better to take the basal (only 6 units) and have an excuse for the odd snack during the day.
When I was in the honeymoon period I took a tiny amount of basal.
Now I take 5.5 in the am and 7.5 in the pm. (I use levemir as it is cheaper and more flexible, plus lasts the 24 hours when split. Lantus did not cover me for 24 hours. Both these basal insulins do not have a peak and are not affected by exercise)
I will eat a 10gm snack of protein and carbs if I am under 145 otherwise I will go low in the night.
If I am over 145 I will take a small correction dose. Half what I would take before a meal if high otherwise I will go low in the night.
Try eating a snack before bed (say peanut butter on crackers, 0%yoghurt and a few nuts) to aviod lows at night.
Once your pancreas stops spluttering it actually becomes a little bit easier as the spluttering of insulin makes calculating the insulin to carb ratio tricky. Some of us have a different ratio of insulin to carbs for each meal.
to begin with it seems like a pain in the you know where, but gradually as you get used to this life will continue on just as it was. You can do anything and everything you want to do. Just requires a little more planning and some modifications.
Good Luck

I was in a 'honeymoon' stage for my first 5 years, I only have to take very little fast acting insulin twice a day, 6u in total (2 before breakfast, 4 before supper) I was very sensitive to it and would go low by just walking down my driveway. I was sad when my honeymoon ended. I now take 7 shots a day of basal and bolus.
