The American Diabetes Association is having a diabetes Expo
near where I live (Northern Virginia) on April 17, 2004. Has anyone ever attended one of these? It's at the Convention Center.
It sounds very exciting! It will be my and my husband's first one.
They are having cooking demonstrations, live web site demonstrations, a bookstore, kiddie stuff, information on various educational programs, events & advocacy, exhibits featuring the latest products and services, lectures, questions answered by medical professionals, FREE health screenings.
Guess you can tell I found that info from their brochure...lol
Sounds good to me :)

Hi Susan,
Tony went to something like that last year in Boston. He will probably post and tell more, but I recall him bringing back a great deal of information. I think it would be an opportunity to learn a great deal and, if you really like trade shows, have a great time.
Please give us a full report when you return. Also, be sure to grab all the freebies you can get!:D

Looks like it would be a great thing. If they are giving away any meters, I'll bet you need to get there early.
You posted this topic before I had a chance to.
The Boston expo is next Saturday and I will be attending. If anyone wants some info from a company let me know.
All the Manufacturers will be there with thier latest products. One company was giving away free meters. Which I had gave away here to one lucky person. I had a bag full full of freebies too.

... since you've been to one already Tony, do you think the companies are there just to make a fast buck and to promote their products? Or there is a real effort made to teach and raise awareness about new technologies and such? I've always been curious about that...
Thanks in advance!
Marie
:)
I don't think they are there to make a fast buck. I think they are there to make us aware of thier new products. I had talked with a couple of companys when I was there. They never tried to push the product on me. They would simply explain what produts they have out and how they work. It gives them a chance to show off thier goods.

I wish one of these would come to our area. Looks like DC is the closest, and it's 6 hours or so up the road. I love trying the new stuff.

I live in Northern Virginia. I would like to attend one of these. Is there a website where I can get more info on this?

Oradev, looks like there is one in your back yard on 4-17. That's the one that Susan was talking about. You can access the full Expo schedule by clicking on this link...

Tony,
Sorry I beat you to the punch on this topic. I didn't realize it would interfere with what you wanted to post :(
The American Diabetes Association had a convention in San Francisco a couple of years ago. It was huge. I couldn't see the whole thing in a day. I spent some time checking out all of the new meters, pumps, and injecting devices. There were plenty of free samples, sugar free candy, meters, and everything else you can imagine. There were booths there with more of the technical information about what causes diabetes, and how they are trying to cure it. All of the diabetes products suppliers were there. I brought some questions with me from people in the forums, and asked them at the convention. There was a lot of free information on stem cell research, and other possible cures.
Plan on spending the whole day, or even 2 days if you can.
You can view the thread where I talked about the convention at http://www.diabetesforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=140
One of the more interesting conversations I had was with a Minimed rep. He was from Germany, and his English was a little rough, but he had a lot of information. I had asked him about an implantable insulin pump. They were using them in Europe at the time. I don't know if they still are, or if they are going to be available in the states, but here is a link to that thread. http://www.diabetesforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=1280#post1280
I don't know if anybody remembers when Nell Carter was doing commercials for that diabetes supplier a couple of years ago, but I got to meet here while I was there. She autographed a picture for my son, and I got to talk to her a little. I heard she passed away last year.
I recommend writing down a list of questions you would like answered before you go. I don't know if the convention will be as big as the one in SF, but I was overwhelmed with all of the information available.
The new products that were being pushed at the time included the Glucowatch, the One Touch Ultra InDuo, and the Freestyle Copilot.

I've always wanted to go to one of these Expos. I'd love to see what kind of new products and what kind of advances they are making in this disease. Also...getting a few freebies doesn't hurt either :D
