Hello!

From personal experience, I know support groups often make the difference...

This forum is a wonderful easy way to get in touch with people, to learn and to share. The beauty of it is it's just a click away and you get to share with people from all over. But what about those support groups which are in your neighbourhood?

So do you belong to one? Do you go to meetings? How often? Does it help? Do you think online forums will replace them?

I'm just asking because I've just discovered there is a local support group and thought it would be interesting to meet new people. I'm also keen to hear from guest speakers. It's always bound to be interesting and informative.

What are your views on the matter?

Take care everyone!

Marie

We have a support group here in the area. It meets onces a month sometimes they hold a dinner. I have never gone but it isn't becasue I don't want to. I just forget about it when the time is here. Its right after work and usually I just want to go home and put the old feet up.

Of course! Isn't this what this site is all about? It IS really a support group of sorts!

While I haven't researched official support groups in my area, has anyone tried the website meetup.com. Despite what you might think, this is not a dating service. You enter in your city or zip and interests and find a group of people who are actually meeting to discuss the topic. Meeting places include coffee shops, bookstores, etc.

You may want to check it out...

There are several in my area, but I'm not much of a "joiner" and never have been. I thought about it, but never went.

This Forum is a great support group and is more my style and I like it here a lot.

There is a support group at my hospital, not too far away from me, but in another town. I also forget when the meeting is, and it's only held like once a month. Plus, afterwork and the gym sometimes I don't feel like doing much other than being a couch potato :D Another reason to why I have been hesitant about going is b/c I feel that they are going to mostly be discussing Type 2 diabetes. And though they have some of the symptoms, I think that Type 1 and Type 2 are quite different. I rather they have 2 separate support groups. I went to something once there, and they spent most of the nite speaking about Type 2. I understand that they make up most of the population of diabetics, but I'd like to be involved in something that I can relate to. JMO.

There is a support group at my local hospital too....a couple of members of my family said they would go with me, but I have not gone yet. Not enough courage I think.

I feel like if I'm going, I need to arm myself with more knowledge first - (thats where this place comes in-no question is a stupid question here).

Love Linda

statdeac,

That's the beauty of the internet. You never really know for sure. Of course, that is assuming that I wear pajamas.:-
It was fairly warm today, y'know.

Yep the 27th of every month I've been going faithfully to my group since I was a teenager.

Ahem actually I should say I had been going faithfully...seems this has become my support group and second home as well...

Nu-uh no webcam. Don't wanna have to wear pajamas.

When i was still living in Toronto i had a great support group. There was a lot of demand for them at the Toronto chapter of the CDA so a few of us got trained on how to lead a support group and we started a few new ones. So for a year i was a member of one and a leader of another. But the new ones didn't seem to have groups that really clicked. They only lasted the one year.

I want to start one here in paris, but it won't be right away. We have just created the paris chapter of the French diabetes association. I am on the board so i hope to start up a support group once we actually get our association up and running.

Internet groups are great (especially this one!!), but there is still nothing like meeting people face to face to talk about the daily ups and downs of living with diabetes.

I don't anymore, but it really got me through as a teenager. I tried to find out if there is one in the area I am in now (greater Manchester) cos I would like to do some voluntary work for them if there is, but there doesn't seem to be at the moment.
