Thanks for all your well-wishes guys! I have to admit, it still feels awfully weird that 25 years of D is something to be congratulated for.

I've been thinking of Tricia's idea to buy myself something silver, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. I'm thinking of getting a ring and engraving on the inside "December 27, 1981 - " on it, and then when they cure me, I'll engrave that date after the "-". Thoughts?

Gangrel
01-02-2007, 07:57 AM
That's a cool idea actually. Would you have anything special on the outside? Or just a plain ring...... hmmm, makes more sense that way to me actually. Just like you can't tell someone is diabetic just by looking at them, a person would need to look "inside" your ring to know what it's about.....

Ooooo, that's deep for the first day of work of the year..... someone spiked my coffee :)

I was trying to decide about that too. I was trying to find some kind of symbol to put on the outside.....like a symbol for hope or something, but I haven't found anything I liked. I'm open to suggestions! Of course, I don't want to spend TOO much on it either, and to custom-design something really fancy might start to get pricey.

Gangrel

If it was me, i'd just leave it plain. I dunno, seems appropiate to me.

Then again, i like plain jewellary, so it could just be me!

what about chinese symbol for hope and good health?

belyro
01-02-2007, 08:52 AM
what about chinese symbol for hope and good health?

I thought of that, and I think I'd do it if I was Chinese, but I kind of feel like I want to stay away from symbols from other cultures - just b/c they're not reflective of who I am. Unfortunately, I don't think there are many symbols in my background cultures.

I believe the IDF has a new symbol for diabetes, but it's kind of plain - a blue circle. Plus, I wouldn't make it blue, so it wouldn't be the same. It would probably just look silly. And who knows if the IDF symbol will actually stick around. unite for diabetes - A global symbol for diabetes (http://www.unitefordiabetes.org/campaign/symbol/)

Hmmm.....

Gangrel
01-02-2007, 09:41 AM
Symbols are over done sometimes...... I appreciate what they are, and what they represent, but I think too many people get them because they "look cool" as opposed to using them to represent a facet of their life or what not......

Sorry, not talking about this case beth, just a rant in general.

Maybe you can get a syringe engraved on it? ;) A reminder of what we had to use "back in the day"......

OK, I think I found the ring I want (finally).

It's sterling silver (for the "silver" anniversary) - not too wide but not too narrow either. Just regular shiny silver, not brushed or anything (I wanted something simple). It has a tiny (real) diamond in it - right in the centre.

It's simple, but classic. I don't want to get something that I'll think looks silly in 10 years, and I don't want to get something that's too delicate and is going to break in 5 years. I want something that I can wear for the rest of my life.

The engraving in the inside will be "December 27, 1981 - " on it, and then when they cure me, I'll engrave that date after the "-".

What do you guys/gals think?

ARGH! I'm having so many delays with this ring! I did finally get the ring, but now I'm working to confirm the date of my diagnosis to have engraved on it.

My mom and I realized that December 27th, 1981 was actually a Sunday, so it wouldn't have been that date. We think it was likely the 28th. I phoned the health records line at the hospital where I had been admitted and they basically spit in my face for asking for this information for "personal" (i.e. "unimportant") reasons. It was very upsetting. So my CDE has been trying to use her contacts to track down the date for me. She couldn't find anything at first, and then we realized that she was using my married name and not my maiden name (I had forgotten to give her my maiden name). So today she tried again with my maiden name and got back to me and said, "We have a date!", but the date they gave her was December 1, 1981....which makes no sense b/c my mother is convinced it was after Christmas - because I was sick over Christmas and they took me in on the first day the clinic was open after Christmas.

I know if it's *this* hard to find it, chances are if I put the wrong date on the ring, I'll never know that it's wrong....but it's the principle of the issue. I want my actual diagnosis date on there! So far December 28, 1981 is looking most likely.

Gripe gripe gripe.......

YAY!! I got the date! I asked my mom about December 1, 1981 as a possibility and here's what she sent me......

That most definitely is NOT the date! And I just followed up on an idea that has given us exactly what we want!!!! During the first years of marriage -- in the Olden Days before e-mail -- I used to type up a monthly "family news" letter to copy and mail to extended family / close friends to keep in touch. I STILL HAVE THOSE LETTERS IN MY FILING CABINET!!!

Here's a quote from January 1982:

"We came home from Winkler on the 27th in the evening, and then got Barry [that's my Dad] ready to leave for Saskatoon and Edmonton the next evening to supervise their inventory taking. That same day we had Bethany's urine tested for sugar content and had our fears realized when the results were incredibly high -- possible diabetes. Barry left for the West anyway because we had to wait until Wednesday for confirming blood tests. Rosalie [Dad's sister] came to stay with me and Bethany, which was a real Godsend because after the tests on Wednesday we ended up in Winnipeg at Children's Hospital! Barry came home Wednesday night as planned, after just missing my message to him via his office as to what was going on! Needless to say, by the time he tracked us down (through his parents and a cousin) he was a bit upset!"

So there you go!!!! Does that all work out to confirmed diagnosis on Dec. 30?

YAY!!!
Love, Mom

So I got it! Next step - engraving!

I had two ER visits. One worse than the other (i.e. DKA). They were both in the last 5 years. No seizures or even unconsciousness. I hope the next 25 years are as uneventful as the first. :)

The camera's about 3 years old I think. Not too old, but definitely not as fancy as some of them out there right now. It's just a really good point-and-shoot digital. :)

The ER's didn't exactly happen at night. The first time I had food poisoning. I got sick at night, then stopped being sick during the day, but still didn't eat anything (or take enough insulin....I was on Ultralente back then), and by about 6pm that day I was in the ER with DKA - throwing up again, having trouble breathing, etc. They fixed me up pretty quick. The other time was another stomach illness episode. I just went in because I couldn't keep anything down and my bloodsugar was dropping and I was travelling, so I was scared I'd end up bottoming out (hypo-wise) and not being able to eat. I just needed to be on an IV for a bit and then I was OK. I've never had a situation where I needed an ambulance or needed someone else to force-feed me or anything....I've always made my own decision to go to the hospital, and ridden there in a car (or taxi). I've been lucky compared to some of the people on here with much more traumatic experiences.
