View Full Version : Tim Hortons - Donuts

Wow....Donuts really spike the BGs, and FAST. Today I decided to treat myself with a donut (one of those things I haven't had since Oct 2 at least). I had a Timmy's Chili Combo, tea and a Walnut Crunch donut. Well, I was 4.2 before lunch, and only 40 minutes later I'm a 10.4. The chili only has 17 Carbs, but the brochure says the donut has 60 carb alone (and my diabetic nurse/educator told me that since Timmy items are hand made they can be inconsistent in carb counts anyways).
Oh well, lesson learned. I'm scared to see what my 2 hour post meal number is. I'll be back to tell you.

When i have a dohnut, i double the insulin i take for a roll/bap, wait 5-10 minutes then enjoy it. Doesn't seem to affect me that way!

I don't know about Ontario, but here in B.C. the bakery item at Tim Horton's aren't hand made anymore. They are brought in pre-made and frozen, then baked on premise. Not as good as they used to be. Well, this was your first chili and doughnut test - it might take a few tries and then you'll have it down pat.:)

Well, two hours post and I'm at 8.4. Phew (wipes brow). I swore I was goint to be around 17. So, I'll have to bolus a little higher for a donut next time, although I'm cutting WAY back on the "unhealthy" foods now.
And tanyatype1, I'm not really sure either if they are hand made, I rather don't believe it, but they still have "bakers" on site, so you never know. Who cares, it's soooo gooood tasting.

Eri just had a small hot chocolate and her bgl is ok(endo said to make sure she drinks anything so we can flush out her ketones...her bg dropped to 40mg/dL a little while ago)...her bgl is now 197.
Tim Horton's is WAY addicting...those chocolate dipped are the kids' favourite.
My dh's is the iced cappuccino...lol.

Bad bad bad for a diabetic!

I find the Tim Hortons carb counts pretty consistant. However, chilli has a lot of protein that oculd raise bs too. Some foods just require a higher carb ratio.

Ya, it's all so good! Today I had one of their low fat (2 grams) cranberry muffins for the first time and it was really good. Took 5 units to cover the 60 gram carb count and it worked perfectly, so........yeah! I think it tasted like another!

You must open your mouth to a whole new way of drooling. Tim Hortons isn't really a donut/coffee chain as much as it is more of a Canadian way of life. It's just part of our culture. You know, some people go to church, other's take daily showers? Well, Canucks go straight from bed to Tim's in the morning, and mid morning, noon, afternoon, pre-dinner, dinner, dessert, and evening drink, and night time snack, and possibly a midnight snack.

Tim Horton = Dunkin Donut = Krispy Kreme = All DELICIOUS yet TERRIBLE. They spike my BG like nothing else. And if I eat one for breakfast, there's 10 units of insulin on ONE. LOL. I rarely eat donuts and yes, since they are most handmade they are terrible on getting the BG perfect.

You're a funny duck! The coldest winter temperature that we ever get here is about -12C! Most winter days I can't wear my winter coat because it's too warm! But, I'm lucky enough to live on the west coast of British Columbia.

They are excellent! The bun is more of a biscuit than a bread - nice and flaky. I usually only have a bite of my hubby's though - just give me my extra large, double cupped, 2 cream, Sugar Twin and straw on the side, and I'm set!

I don't know about the rest of you, but it takes 10-20 minutes to go through the drive thru in the morning. It sure is worth it for that extra large decaf

And Buffalonians. The one near my house has a line inside and at the drive through the clogs the whole parking lot 24/7. I went at 4 am once hoping to not wait in line. Nope. I don't get it, because there aren't people anywhere else in my village at that time...

Not sure which part you mean....
For the Canada part everyone just loves Canada. They do no wrong and hate nobody so nobody hates them.
As for the hispanic part. I shoulda been more clear. I mean illegal ones. I know quite a few legal ones that speak fluent English. That's the key word, FLUENT, not 2 words and that's your English vocab. I'm one that thinks if you want to live (as in long term, not a 2 month job stay) in the US you need to speak the US language, which is English. They are just flooding this area like nothing else. Not to mention make our job EXTREMELY difficult and I won't be the first to say they could commit murder, leave their ID behind, be stopped by 50 police officers, and none would know they pulled over a murderer.

Interestingly enough No. I think it has to do with all the fat in the Chili and the whole wheat bun slowly releasing carbs even after the donut spikes. That's my only guess. Although I frequently go low if my two hour mark is around 8, so that must be the reason.

I have one down the hall from me in the hospital I currently work at. I don't induldge in the non-coffee items very often. When I do it's a choc-chip muffin. I usually bolus for 60gms of carbs instead of their 71gms. I actually bolused for 70 yesterday and went low.
Question: When does "Roll-up the Rim" begin?

I was surprised when I read their Nutrician booklet, that their highest fibre muffin is the Low-fat cranberry.(2 grams fat) I would have guessed that one of the oatmeal or bran muffins would have the highest fibre content. The low-fat cranberry has 7 grams of fibre.(if it's correct) Weird though because it looks and tastes like a white cakey muffin.

Mmmm doughnuts.. I have a little doughnut problem myself. The QFC grocery store in my town has really good doughnuts. Texture is just right.. not too light, but not dry/chewy. I usually get a dozen of them on sale at the end of the day once a week. Amazing how many carbs are in the **** things..

I hear from a reliable source - my niece - that most everything at Tim Horton's contains MSG. MSG along with the high fat in the donuts help people to gain weight. My niece is allergic to MSG so was telling me which restaurants she can eat something at. It was very few I'm afraid. Usually only ones serving real eggs for instance. MSG is used as a preservative in most of your spices and lots of other processed foods. No wonder people gain more weight nowadays compared to past years when my grandparents grew up. MSG is also used to fatten up mice till they become diabetic so they can be used in diabetic research tesing.
Moderation is the key, so a moderate amount of MSG probably will not significantly affect one's health just as a moderate amount of donuts won't have an ill affect on one.:hypocrite

There is one thing different, Tim Horton's donuts are like half the size of Dunkin Donuts. No matter who's donuts your eating though, they all make you tired....
10 units for one. Geez I only take about 2 units. This makes me feel better, I can go have one tomorrow.

I'm from the South, and Krispy-Kreme donuts are a staple 'round here....they were my FAVORITE dessert....esp. warm. Haven't had one since my diagnosis (only since Aug/06, but it seems FOREVER!). I pass the shop on my way home from work each night, roll down my window and nearly hyperventilate--smells are carb FREE, right?). According to dietfacts.com, 1 original glazed donut has 22 carbs.....hmmmmmm.....might be worth it?! Of course, who wants to stop with just ONE? Guess i'd better limit my exposure to smells only!:hello:

Question: When does "Roll-up the Rim" begin?
It definitely started last week! =) Roll up the rim is my favorite time of year! (and I won on my first cup!) My favorite is an XL pepermint tea... where I work Tim Hortons is a religion... I work a night shift with a bunch of guys and there are at least 4 trips made in a 12 hour period with rounds bought by whoever goes.
I for one don't think the amount I would have to bolus is worth the donut.
Here in Alberta we also changed from fresh baked to frozen. Not too sure how the new ones taste, but I've heard they are not as good, which is to be expected.
