For those who have to get up and have breakfast. What counts as a breakfast? Is it a couple pieces of toast or 6oz of yogurt. How about bacon eggs and toast. In other words how much food counts as having breakfast and is enought to keep you from having highs.

I think this might be different for everyone. For me, as a type 1 on the pump, I could skip it if I wanted to, but I , personally, cannot go w/o breakfast. What my dietician set up for me was to have 2 carbs(30 gms) in the morning, with a protein and 1 fat. I think that is a pretty modest breakfast, but it seens to work for me, although sometimes I have a hard time fitting that protein in in the morning. I don't know if this is possible, but i would try sitting down with a registered dietician, preferably one knowledgeable in diabetes, and work out a few options. Then try things out, and see what works best for you.

Hi KCwinter,
Breakfast for me depends on how my sugar is running. I normally check first thing and then decide what and how much to eat. An average breakfast for me might be 4 eggs(boiled or scrambled) with two pieces of whole wheat toast. If my sugar is really low, I will follow that up with a cup of yogurt.

Hey kc.
A dietician might be the best person to judge this. Or you might try experimenting with proteins and carb combinations to see what works for you.
I'm not a big eater, especially at breakfast. I normally eat a yogurt (10 CHO), or a minigo (9 CHO) or a Special K bar (18 CHO).

Hi Kc,
I think everything you eat would count as breakfast. Dietician told me protein doesn't count and I don't have to bolus for it. I tried that - eating a boiled egg or something, but It does count for me!! My Bg would go up - well not as much as if I ate carb's, but still.. So I would count a serving of protein as half a serving of carb's.
This works for me, but we are all different so you just have to experience and see what works for you.
They also say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I don't take that seriously lol
Usually I don't eat breakfast at all and I don't see what's so important about it:confused: :D

I don't normally have time/ desire for breakfast, and being on lantus I can get away with that. Normally a glass of fruit juce is enough.

Since I'm strictly diet controlled right now, I try to eat breakfast, so I can "space" my calories through the day. Typically, a couple of Whole Wheat Eggos, a cup of yogurt, and maybe a small bowl of cheerios. (The dietician set me 4 carbs per meal...)

Whatever you eat qualifies as breakfast.
Once in a while I have Raisin Bran, but most days it's two slices of whole wheat toast and 2 slices of bacon, and coffee.

Skipping meals is ok for a pump user maybe. I'm on MDI. I've never skipped meals since dx'd even don't know how to do that.

Peanut Butter and jelly sandwich with either cup of Tea or cup of Coffee.
I keep the amount of PB and (Sugar Free)Jelly below the 5 Carb limit and use whole wheat bread and I don't have to Bolus for that.
If I have physical work plkanned I add protein, such as egg or meat of some sort depending on the amount of physical activity planned.

How do you get away with eating two slices of toast and not bolusing? I could never.

1. I just graded my previous post and it gets a Z- for grammar and spelling
2. I don't think I mentioned toast--allergic to toasted bread--too many crumbs--too much mess to clean up
3. I haven't got the faintest idea--I can get away with 15-20 Carbs and B/G doesn't go up above 125/6.9-130/7.2 but the magical # seems to be 21-22 Carbs and
WHOOSH
reading in the low 10,000 range:smartass: if I don't bolus,
funny thing is that when I bolus I use 15:1 ratio--go figure:rolleyes:

What counts as a breakfast?
Actually anything you eat post sleeping no matter what time of day, How much depends on ones diet. My dietician wants me to have a veggie in the morning, and the only why that's going to happen is to have a slice of pizza. :D
Use to never eat breakfast myself. It was not because there was no desire, it was because food looked disgusting when I first woke up. Well after after finding out my gall bladder was rotten I learned that excessive fasting could cause gall bladder desease. There's even suspicion, from stats, that skipping breakfast may contribute to type two diabetes.

I get up at 5:30 and I'm never hungry at that time, so I wait until I get to work (around 7:15) to eat my breakfast. I've been taking a container of light yogurt (17 carbs), a cup of cubed strawberries (15 carbs), and a piece of cheese (1 carb) for breakfast and that keeps me satisfed until I eat lunch around 12:30. Some days I alternate and take a small serving of high fiber cereal (about 19 carbs worth) to mix in with the yogurt. I'm a creature of habit, so I"ll probably stick with this for a while!!!

I eat a big bowl of the Fibre One cereal with milk. I've found it's a great way to get the fibre, carbs and protein I need in the mornings. Usually I only have to take 3 units of Humalog to cover it. And eventhough it's one of the heaviest meals of the day, it requires the least insulin!! :)
Belinda, have you tried the Merita low carb bread? It's phenomenal. Not one of those thin, pasty slices. I'm SOOO hooked.

To boost the "Health Value" of breakfast I've started adding "Carb Freedom Yogurt" 5 carbs per 6oz container.
I have never liked yogurt--got that Nasty acid "Whang" taste to it--but several of the ones that use either Splenda or sucrose aren't nearly as "Acidy" and actually taste pleasant.
The whole point of the trial is to eat a bigger breahfast so that maybe I'll be able to cut down on the size of the other two meals and that will made dropping some of this .insulin weight:whistling
To be honest, I do prefer the ones with Splenda better becasue of the texture and slightly better taste.

rzrbks: Actually, I've found I like the "Lite 85" yogurt... low carb and fat free. The banana strawberry is a special favorite.
