Just a quick question. My son, aged 7, always gets a skin reaction after I give him his daily Levemir injection. It is slightly swollen and red around the injection site, about the size of a dime, but it disappears in a day or two. Is it something I should worry about, or must I ignore it.

Someone that I know from the Joslin board has this problem. His doctor told him that he could just ignore it.

When I was deciding between Lantus and Levemir, my endo mentioned that some people find the Lantus stings because of the acid solution it's suspsended in, and a small fraction of people on Levemir will get a tiny rash.
I'd assume, therefore, that it's a known possible reaction and not something to worry about.

Thanks for the reassurances. You know how we tend to worry about every little thing with this condition - especially when the little ones are involved!

I'm not sure if this is ethical, but I wonder if Benadryl would prevent the site reaction? If he has allergies in the summer, it would be interesting to know if it's enough to prevent the reaction! (I'm just a layperson with curiosity.)
