When do you take your bolus? With eating? After eating? How long before? I would like to stop that rise in BS at the 1 hour after eating, but am afraid to change from taking when I eat, to taking before I eat. I know, I know, depends on what you eat too. But I would really need to know how to do this especially for my 6 year old since I dont want that HIGH at 1 hour, but she doesnt always eat her calculated carbs. She also takes it when she eats, not after or before. Suggestions?

I take it right after eating. Symlin might help prevent post meal spikes for you. You can take analogs up to 15 min before eating.

Unless I am low, I've started taking my boluses about 20 minutes before eating. Seems to help tremendously. In fact, it reduces my need for Symlin.

I usually wait until I'm sure of what I'm going to eat, and when it's going to arrive. That usually ends up being right as I'm preparing it - from 5 to 20 minutes in most cases at home. If I'm eating out somewhere nice, it's after I order it.

I've learned the hard way not to bolus on the drive home, thinking I'll be there in 20 minutes. Too much of a chance something might happen and you don't want to be driving when it hits you.

It depends on what my BGL is before eating, and with what certainity I have about what and when I'll be eating.

If my BGL is 90 mg/dl or below at before meal testing, I'll wait to inject until I have the meal ready.

If it's above 90 and less than 110, then I'll inject about 5-10 minutes before the meal if I have certainty the meal will be with me. Above 110 and up to 140, I'll calculate using the uptake profiles and inject maybe as much as 1 hour before actually having my meal. My basic aim with this is to try to have my blood sugar less than 100 mg/dl when starting to eat.

But sometimes due to safety concerns or other factors, I'll bolus just before eating.

Is Symilin that pill for delaying the rise? hmmm I was offered that, but hate to take any pills for fear of side effects in everything.

Symlin is an injection.
