I,m a Grandfather of a 13 year old type 1. Have been reading the posts here for 3-4 weeks. Syd has been fighting this **** for a year now and has never had good control. Her bs jumps all over the place. She has a new pump and will start on it as soon as she goes to her class which is later in the month unless a quicker one opens up. I want to learn everything I can in order to help her get as good of control as possible. She stays with me a lot and I'm the one who stays with her when her parents need to be out of town. Once she is on the pump, I'm sure I'll have lots of questions. Wish I could trade my pancreas for hers and let her get on with life.

Hi there, and welcome!

A grandpa like you, interested in learning about diabetes treatment and supportive, will be such a great help to Syd (and wonderful peace of mind for her parents when they need to be away).

The teens is a tough time for diabetes control because of puberty, and probably worse for girls. If she can get through the next few years just doing her best and being diligent about testing and correcting highs and not giving up, it should get a little easier. My son is 14, and I find it's a real moving target at this time. He has needed to increase his insulin doses about every 3 months for the past year.

Good luck to you both.

You are indeed welcome Coach. I reckon that girl is lucky to have such a caring Grandfather. I wouldn't expect her control to be great particularly at her age. I was the same age when I was first diagnosed and that was back in 1959. .Control wasn't as good then as it is now and I didn't get a pump until 2.5 years ago. However your grandneice has a long and healthy life to look forward to, but she has to be determined to do what is right in order to achieve this goal. Eat proper food and take an appropriate amount of exercise and she should have fewer problems and enjoy life to the full. She does have to be determined in her efforts though. Good luck with your own efforts.
