I'd like to thank Bill (w5wjp) for this suggestion. In talking with him he brought up The Orleans as a hotel. Granted, it's not on the strip, but it does have a bus that goes between the strip and the hotel that is free (correct me if I'm wrong on the free part.)

You can check out the hotel more at.... Orleans Las Vegas Hotel Casino Resort Spa - Official Website (http://orleanscasino.com/)

Here are some nice things about the Orleans.....
~Casino
~Movie theater with first run movies
~Bowling Alley
~Cheap Rates (will mention in a minute)
~Good choice of restaurants

Now, currently they have a special going on called the Mardi Gras Special. I have no idea how long it will last but it appears that it's good anytime Sunday-Thurday. Here are some details on the special: The Orleans Hotel and Casino (http://orleanscasino.com/hotel/mardi-gras-package.html)

Mardi Gras 3-Day/2-Night
Room Package
From $109
Based on Double Occupancy
* 2 Nights Accommodation
* Dinner Buffet for two
* Breakfast Buffet for two
* Complimentary Fun Book
* Subject to availability
* Offered Sunday through Thursday

That is $125 after tax (at least when I called today for the week of the trip it was.) Now, you might be thinking it's only 2 nights. They will allow you to book that package back to back. If one is traveling solo you don't need much else. That would be 4 breakfasts and 4 dinner buffets for yourself, which can be a huge savigns in money.

The "Fun Book" has even more money saving coupons in it.

When I asked for a quote on the room after taxes from June 24 to June 29 (5 nights) I was given $340.40 after taxes. To me, that is a heck of a deal.

Now, what I'd like to know is. Who on here is planning on attending, for how long, and would you be interested in staying at The Orleans. Just trying to get an idea of numbers and where people will be staying. If you plan elsewhere, let me know.

Thanks,
~Jedi

I live in Las Vegas. The Orleans is a very nice "locals" resort. Huge amount of gaming, great eats, among the best bang for the buck as far as buffet quality versus price (though take "sugar-free desserts" with a grain of Equal). I'm not sure if the cocktail waitresses still wear the butt-floss. That used to be one of my favorite things about The Orleans. That and having a nice Guinness Draft at the "Irish pub" right before I go upstairs to see a movie.

It is a Coast Resorts property. What that means for guests is that you can catch a shuttle bus down to The Barbary Coast (Flamingo/Strip) which is right near the Flamingo, Bally's, Caesars Palace and Bellagio. Alternatively if you are willing to walk a few blocks, you can walk to New York, New York, MGM Grand, Tropicana, Luxor, etc. Or drop $1.50 on the CAT bus.

I KNEW IT!!!

There had to be something else besides the coupons that drew Jedi to this hotel. :D

Coupons vs. Butt Floss....

Coupons win. Now if I could just find a coupon for flying out there.

Oh, the fact that it's a "locals resort" also means that the odds are better than on The Strip. It also means that there's a bit fewer slot machines and more video poker. Many Las Vegans (including myself) prefer a game where you have some control over the odds.

Per Nevada state law, a video poker machine MUST deal a straight hand. The deck gets shuffled before every new hand, but it doesn't force you to lose. The odds are determined by the payout table (there's particular hands that tend to be varied to impact the odds one way or the other, esp. full house) and by how the player plays.
