Thank you everyone for the kind welcome and words, I do have one more question for you all, has any one had any type of skin problem related to your diabetes? I started getting these red spots about a year ago, they start small like the size of a dime and some get really big. I have one on the top of my foot that is growing in size and the one on my ankle bone has gotten so big its the size of a softball if not bigger. Went to a dermatologist and she said it is related to the diabetes and will go away as quickly as it came, but its still there all of them. I have one on the side of my knee, back of my leg and the other 2 I already mentioned. Has anyone else had this problem? and if so how long did it take for them to go away.. They are not painful unless i hit the one on my ankle. just really ugly. She gave me cortizone tape but it dont seem to help. None of the doctors i have seen seem to worried about it, so i am not either just wondering with summer comming if these things are gonna go away so i dont look like a spotted lepeord in a bathing suit:cool: Thanks in advance for any comments Have a great nite..

Hi Orange7! I'm sorry that I don't have an answer for you, but if I were you I'd be REALLY pushing for some answers/help from your doctor! A good friend of mine had Crohn's Disease (in my opinion - way worse than diabetes) and she had these skin ulcers that sound like what you're describing - very painful! I would think that they should at least be bandaged or something to keep them clean and uninfected. Please push for some answers and help!

Has the dermatologist given you a name for these spots? Are the spots itchy?

Hi And Welcome to our Family. :)

I think what you may have is NLD(Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum).
I got one on my left ankle when I was about 19 yrs. old. My Endo
knew the minute she looked at it, what it was.

It never bothered me, since it's on the side of my ankle and I can't
really see it without a mirror. When it was red(that's when it's inflamed),
I used to just put a fragrance free cream on it, let it dry, then put a
lighter coloured powder on it. I still have it but it's been more a yellowish
colour for yrs. now. Not many People noticed it or mentioned it. A
couple thought it was a burn when it was red.

It doesn't matter if your sugars are Good or not. The Dr. said that
doesn't make a difference. With some people it goes away, others
it doesn't. I only have the one spot though. Definitely protect the
spots. My Son drove his ride-on truck, accidently into my ankle when
he was 2 1/2yrs. old.. Ouchie! That hurt and I got 2 little ulcers on
the spot. My Dr. gave me some cream to put on it to clear the ulcers.

There were about 5 others Ladies on this site who have it. Some
haven't been here for a while.

Here is a site: Mine is definitely NLD not the other underlined condition.
Also just google the name and it'll bring up more info about it on other
sites.

Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum (http://www.aocd.org/skin/dermatologic_diseases/necrobiosis_lipoid.html)

Take Care.

Are you by chance taking any blood thinners? or daily asprin? My mom had these spots come on her like that (she is not the diabetic) and called them age spots but the doc ask about asprin and it was the culprit. It is just an idea...if not I would investigate further and want a better explaination then what you were given

Hey everyone thanks for all the info, i wish I could remember the name for what the dermotolgist called it, but I cant i know it was long. I guess I should clarify, the spots on me are not open sores, they look more like raised bruises if that makes any sense. They start red and sometimes turn a purplish shade. I guess It looks like the blood vessels are right at the surface of my skin. It doesnt itch or anything just ugly. it doesnt even hurt unless i hit the one on my ankle. Kickstart, I will checkout that web site it sure sounds similar, to what I am experiencing. Thanks for everything I am sure glad I found you guys Be tallking to you all soon... orange
