This is an interesting topic. I think I'll ask my wife tonight if she'd like to give me my Lantus too; it seems it'd be easier to give rather than my humalog in a pen. Although I doubt she will.

I voted for yes. I'm not dating anyone right now, but I have let friends (fellow nursing students) inject me, so I obviously would.

I never thought about it, but I would let him. I would think it's harder to give someone else a shot than yourself...I wonder if he would do it? I'll have to ask.
(But, hey, if it makes Lantus TICKLE....well, that's worth looking into!)

Maybe it was the location of the injected and not knowing WHEN she would put the needle in... made it tense and i couldn't stop giggling lol.

I'm totally weirded out by the idea of having someone give me a non-insulin needle (e.g. flu shot), but have no problem with someone else giving me my insulin. A friend of mine is trained as an emergency medical technician (EMT), but doesn't work as one, so he jumps at the chance to give someone (i.e. me) a needle every now and then. It's funny b/c he's always worried about whether he's doing it right and if it's going to hurt me.

No, I don't even let my Dr draw blood for my A1C. I prefer to do it myself and he lets me. I know exactly where my veins are, and I have had people before stick me 6 times trying to find a vein. I refuse to let that happen anymore.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a nurse who was taking my blood for an A1C.

"So, do you have to inject for your diabetes then?"
"Yeah, usually around 5-6 times a day."
"Oh, I don't know how you do it. I couldn't manage sticking a needle in me that many times a day."
*sticks needle in my vein*
"Doesn't seem to stop you doing it to other people though..."

lol

Yes, I have let girls I have dated shoot me up. Only if they asked too. Come to think about it the girls that shot me up were the ones not worth having around. Go figure lol.

Are you kidding??? When we first met I thought she'd pass out the first time I injected in front of her. And I've never had a need for her to give me my injection.

Just asked hubby and he said no he wouldn't do it if I could do it for myself. He said he would only if there was no way for me to inject myself. Funny thing is, he's a volunteer firefighter (we're rural) and goes on many a medical call for others....

My hubby wanted to know what the needles felt like, so one night he took one of the syringes and started poking himself in the stomach, leg etc.! Then he made the mistake of saying, " this is no big deal, it doesn't hurt at all!"

H E double hockey sticks, NO!

My husband has NO attention to detail. You should have seen me freak out at the fertility clinic when they told me he HAD TO give me one of my shots (they are intra-muscular, in the behind). I hated it. I was always worried he was doing something wrong. I eventually found a way to do them myself, even though they said it was impossible, lol.

Ah... lets say.... NO FREAKING WAY!!!
Well, I might consider it if he was diabetic as well, but otherwise, not a chance in heck!!

I used to let my kids do it until my oldest son used it like a harpoon. My husband would, but I am pumping. So...neh.

Hmmmm......

Girlfriend + Potential means of harm, pain, and possibly death = not a good thing!

I dunno, i need context. Have I forgotten to take out the garbage, or forgot an important date? :D

I don't know if i'd let her or anyone else do it..... maybe if i was dating another diabetic i would.....

I don't like anyone else giving me any type of injection either, or drawing blood. I can't even look! My family agrees I would have to be totally out for them to do it.

My hubby never has. Neither insulin or glucagon.
My mom had to when I was started on insulin. They wouldn't let me leave the hospital until she had drawn up and injected one dose into me. I have let my neice once when she was in nursing school (good thing she didn't finish nursing school, ouch !!). No one else has and those 2 only did it once.

My boyfriend asked to do my Lantus shot one night and I said no. Wanted him to try it out on an orange first to see his technique, LOL! In the end, he never did, but I might bring the idea up again and see how he does.

I just remember my dad giving me shots when I was first diagnosed because I was too scared to do them for 1-2 weeks, and he shot me up like he was playing darts! :vroam:

So far I've never had anyone else give me a jab. I think I would though, if I trusted the person and needed help. Maybe even just for a laugh or to satisfy their curiosity... if I was in a good enough mood!

I just remember my sister asked to do my novorapid for me when we went out for my other sisters birthday. She's a vetinary nurse, so she gives animals shots all the time, but for some reason when it came to poking her brother (me) with a teeny weeny 6mm needle she hesitated... She got there in the end... althought she did it much quicker than i do it!! I prefer to slide the needle in slowly, but she used the "dart" technique a few of us have mentioned... Laura has only done my lantus... maybe i'll let her do my novorapid... bum... tummy... bum... tummy hehe

I used to let my 2 year old daughter do it when I was pregnant with my son...boy that was a long time ago. When you're pregnant your belly's out so far that you can see everything so I would let her and she actually did a good job of it: she didn't have sense to be nervous. That being said, there's no way I'd let her do it now and I don't think she'd want to. My son has asked but I think he'd like it too much!

Yes, sometimes Hubby gives me shots where I can't reach
any more because of my RA. It erks me however to see
anyone else getting shots. I always turn my head. :ahhhhh:
Even if I see it on t.v. Weird. I would give shots to someone
if I had to.

My doctor suggested I have my husband give me a shot from time to time...just in case he ever has to give me glucagon one day. I guess the theory is that he will know what he is doing. I think it has helped him be more active in the process that is diabetes...and to be less afraid of the needle.

The glucagon needle is somewhat bigger and more "dawnting" than a pen needle thought... im not sure i could do the glucagon myself that's for sure!!

i used to think that with the glucagon pen... but wen i was half unconcious - i was still more worried about my sister doing it for me and mangaged to do it!

before i left hospital - my mum had to give me one injection before I left... never again!!
She has only ever given my dad one as well - he also refuses people to give him his insulin though he is alright with other people giving flu jabs etc.

I have been giving my daughter allergy shots for the past year and to make her feel better, I will let her give me a shot occasionally. She is always disappointed when it does not burn like hers do.

It hurts more though when there is something in the syringe being injected into you. The poke alone is only 60% in my book :) .

I let anyone who wants to, give me a shot. I has been a big icebreaker on first dates as well. It's always funny to be out with a group of people and someone (female only of course) has never seen me shoot up i'll try my hardest to get them to give it to me. I figure it doesn't hurt and they won't do any damage, so why not?

Off topic, but how do you only use one pen? Don't you need long acting insulin too? Or do you have one pen for Levemir and one for Novorapid?

Yes, my partner injects 100% of the time. It's called the Animas IR 1200.

It's interesting how close the poll results are! I would only let my husband give me a shot if I were passed out and it was Glucagon! I don't like anyone giving me shots or taking blood ... I always look away when I get lab work done or flu shots!

Occasionally my bf will do my lantus. He likes feeling involved in my D care... I like that if he ever has to give me glucagon it won't be so scary for him... having already given an injection as practice.

When I was a child, my mom and dad had to practice on an orange, and then ON EACH OTHER (!!) before the doc let them inject me. As I recall (now this is 41 years ago...), my dad injected me exactly once, and my mom maybe a dozen times, then they both gave up and left it all to me. After I got married (33 years ago), I did teach my wife how to inject me, and she was okay about it, but I seldom asked her and she never volunteered. She's never given me a glucagon injection (she'd call 911 instead, back in my hypo-unawareness days of yore), and when I began MDI about 10 years ago and needed more real estate for the extra shots, she refused to inject me in my butt, so I learned to do that myself. So at this point, I'd say that I'm okay with it, but it never happens any longer. Like many here, I don't mind a nurse sticking me for blood--but I can't look!

Maybe I have some trust issues, but I probably would not let my partner inject...
