Hello! I joined this forum on 1/1/07 and jumped right in without taking the opportunity to introduce us... My name is Rich and my son's name is Elias (7). Just before leaving to visit family in Montreal for Christmas 2004 (he had just turned 5), our son was getting over a cold and my wife noticed him thirsty and urinating more frequently than normal. Concerned that it might be diabetes, she called the doctor. The doctor's suggested that it might just be a symptom of his recovery from the cold and that we should monitor the situation. During the week the symptoms continued. It was on our drive home that it became apparent that the condition had worsened as our son needed to urinate about every 45 minutes. The next morning, a test at the doctor's confirmed her fears and it was straight to the emergency room.

Elias was on MDI for about five months (Lantus and Novolog) but his doctor was a vehement pump proponent (thank goodness) and so within about three months of starting the process (with the help of letters from the doctor) he received one. The pump has been great for him since 1) he grazes and MDI was very limiting, 2) he was on such low doses of insulin to start, it was difficult for us to estimate the partial units of insulin in the syringe, and 3) he disliked receiving injections (he's still not thrilled with site changes).

Now we infuse some insulin before he starts eating then bolus the rest as he eats. We weigh just about everything and bolus accordingly. Some items are a challenge but we either bolus conservatively and correct later or use combos and monitor.

Because of two recent lows, eager for answers regarding IOB associated with combo boluses, I did a Google search and it listed this forum. Over the last seven days I've been on the site many hours reviewing your postings. It's an excellent resource.

As a parent of a child with type 1, diabetes has become our labor of love. I feel in kindred spirit with you. We're looking forward to a cure for you and my son. Meanwhile, it's great that this forum is an outlet for caring and sharing. Thanks!

Nice to meet you Rich, although I'm sorry Elias was stricken with this disease as such a young age. Glad the pump is working out well for him! This is a terrific forum with nice people and a ton of information.

Welcome Rich and welcome Elias,
You have found the right site for sure. You also have Elias started on the pump which is a great benefit for both Elias and yourselves. Keep us posted on how he is doing.
