Today my doctor wanted me to try Actos to help the insulin work better and be less resistant. I've been type 1 for a long time and don't really want to take a type 2 medication. Does anybody who is type 1 take any pills to help the insulin work better ? Does Actos cause weight gain as someone has mentioned ?

How much insulin do you take a day now? If you aren't taking some huge amount, say 100+ units, then I wouldn't truely see a need for it yet. Actos, like most prescription drugs, does have some huge side effects. I don't recall weight gain beign one, but I know liver problem is the major one (not trying to scare you there.)

I have used Metformin to deal with insulin resistance. It worked well in that the DP effect was weakened and post-meal spikes were not as severe. But, as a Type 1, I found using an oral drug added another variable to an already complex process. And this made my BG more volatile. I got tired of miro-manging it the whole time. So I stopped using Metformin and concentrated on using exercise and reduced carbs to improve insulin sensitivity. This has worked very well.

Several years ago I had a doctor that wanted me to give it a try. At the time it did not help me, so I came off of it. Like Sky, I have used exercise to help my insulin resistance.
