Has anyone had a creatinine clearance test done and prot/creat and albu/creat tests done? I had mine done recently and am being referred to nephrologist (kidney specialist). My #'s were really high (4-600) for all of them. The doctor informed me that i have "significant proteinurnia (sp?).
Has anyone else had similar experiences?
I'm 29 y/o and have been a Type 1 for 15 years. I have 1 son who is almost 7.
Any advice would be great!

What are your numbers. Specifically:
Urine:
ALBUMIN/CREATININE RATIO
Blood:
BUN
CREATININE
Was the test done while fasting? I will sometimes leak protien as well. Often when my sugars run high for a while. Most pre-diabetics have this problem or protienurea. When sugar starts to spill it starts to loosen up the "filters"(glumerous capsules of the nephrons) and protien starts spilling out. 90% of kidney failure is from diabetes. Usually if you get yourself in good control this will disappear.
I'd reccommend getting some chemstrips and start testing at home.

Proteinuria can also be caused by strenuous exercise or even dehydration. Were you dehydrated at all? Were you told to stay away from certain foods while completing the test?

I also had higher than expected numbers in those categories. Apparently, the liver can cause extra protein to be dumped. Also, injuries and infections, medications, etc. can also be the cause. I'm hoping since my numbers were borderline that that's all it was for me. Good luck, I kinda know what you are going through...

Microalbumin - 408.0 - normal is less than 30
Microalb/creat ratio 283.3 - normal less than 20
Protein 663 - normal less than 150
Prot/creat ratio 406 - normal less than 84
I don't have the results from the blood creat or the creat. clearance test yet.

I have not had any infections, injuries, nor have I been dehydrated. I was not told to stay away from any certain foods, etc. The only advice at this point was to NOT get pregnant (husband and I have been trying for about 8 months).

I had this same issue a few years ago. I went in the first time and my protein was moderate, the next time about six months later was higher than moderate. I got my blood sugar under control better and of all things started drinking cranberry juice light by Ocean Spray. The next time I went in to have the 24 hour urine test I was spilling ZERO protein. Weird story, but true. Doc was amazed and so was I.

First - your microalbumin is irrelvant here. If you are spilling protien, of course you are spilling microalbumin(uAlbumin). uAlbumin is a smaller protien. If you open up the flood gates 3 feet wide 3 foot wide fish will come out and so will all the fish <3 feet (yes I heart you, and yes its a bad analogy but hopefully the point is made).
Your Protienurea is the most concerning. Run in normal BGL range, and get chemstrips to make sure the amount you are spilling goes down with better control. Eventually when you stop spilling protien concentrate on the uAlbumin. uAlbumin requires a lab.
Your blood levels will be of great help here. If your Creatinine and BUN are with in acceptable levels I'd say you will be fine if you tighten up. If they are high you have damage occuring.
Was this a fasting test? (<--this is important) Are you on an ACE inhibitor? Or the other one, I forget what it's called, but help protect the kidneys.

I got my full test results from the doctor. Good news is my creatinine was .9. It didn't have my BUN on there.
I'm not on an ACE right now. I was several years back, but my protein levels went down and my doc took me back off of them so that me and hubby could try to get pregnant. Now it looks like I'm going to have to go back on it and won't be able to get pregnant! That's very upsetting to me.

Oh, and no this was NOT a fasting test.

.9 is excellent, that is wonderful news. Please let us know how your protien levels are after a couple of months of better BGL control. It is also very good you were not fasting. Oh and welcome to the forum :) . Hope to read more.
