Since I have been on Glipizide 5.0mg once/day, I have been trying to eat every few hours to avoid going low. A couple of times my bg dipped to 62 and today, for the first time, it went to 54 without symptoms. I tried cutting back to 2.5mg of Glipizide per day, but my bg began to soar.

My question is, to avoid getting these lows, what kind of foods should I be eating throughout the day? I’ve been munching on things like peanut butter crackers and cheese every few hours, but should I be taking in more carbs for my meals and snacks? I’m starting to feel like I’m eating more often now than before being diagnosed in order to keep from going low. Also, the 25 pounds that I lost is starting to come back!

I’m really starting to get burned-out trying to figure all this stuff out. I spoke with dieticians, and they all say that I appear to understand the the carb counting and the proper way to eat. Well, obviously, I don’t, because I’m either too high or too low.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Protein affects my bg about 75% as much as carbs, but it takes much longer to affect bg. Adding some protein to your diet may be the trick.

Cyborg, do you think that those protein powder drinks sold in the healthfood stores would help?

I would assume anything high in protein would help. Just make sure they aren't loaded with carbs.

I had to drop the glipizide and go back to actos because of too many lows . I am doing much better.

Lew:
I have found a great protein shake...EAS makes it and it's called AdvantEdge Carb Control. Has 1 g impact carbs (4 total carbs), 100 calories and 15 gm of protein and 2 gms fiber. It comes in chocolate, chocolate fudge, french vanilla and strawberry (I prefer chocolate fudge). It's 11 oz and does not have to be refrigerated before drinking (though it is better cold). You could keep one in your desk/car, etc to have on hand in case you go low. These are available at Sam's, WalMart or the drug store.

I also try and eat roasted, unsalted almonds as a snack (10-12 can be a great snack).

Hang in there...it does seem like I eat more frequently as a diabetic than I did before (though my choices are much healthier).

Try the shakes, i'll bet you'll like them. They taste somewhat like a Yahoo drink.

Thanks, Linda. I'll go out today on my lunch hour and see if I can find some of this stuff.

If it doesn't solve the problems (I'll keep my hopes up, however), I'll look into trying the Actos as Gabby mentioned. I remember reading that there are many side effects with Actos. I'll have to research it.
