ok, how many of you drink 1 drink per day or occasionally while on the this drug

the label says its a no no

I've been testing something out to see what happens with my morning numbers

I been drinking 1 shot glass of bacardi rum before bed at night for the past 3 nights, so far my numbers are WAY better of a morning (they used to be 110- 120) they are now 95 - 99 fasting

ill eat breakfast, 2 hours later ill be at around 120
before lunch 80's after lunch 130's
before dinner 80's after dinner 120's

so yes i got great numbers, but i dont wanna keep doing this if it will hurt me in the long run

any comments please

My doctor told me to do the glass of wine in the evening thing. She said that it would help the numbers as well as the other benefits. I haven't got around to trying it yet but I do trust her not to steer me wrong and you and I are on the same meds.

My RD/CDE said 2 drinks a day for men and 1 for women are OK.

For many, alcohol lowers blood sugar and I think the warning is there to prevent you from going hypo. If your numbers are OK I think you're fine.

I typically drink 1 or 2 bloody Mary's each evening, no ill effects for me, YMMV.

I'm on metformin 500 mg 2 x daily. I have been having a glass of red wine before bedtime (mainly to try and raise HDL levels--I'm not a red wine fan). I've not noticed any difference in my levels the next morning. Not sure what it does right after, as I'm usually off to bed. Checked with my doc who said there should be no problem, but not to have more than 2 glasses/night.

That is just awesome! I think I'll pour me a glass in my waterford that just sits in the the china cabinet so lonely since I was dx'd.

I myself have noticed that I can't handle my sweet wines any more... I can jump into the 500's easy but.... my beer and clamato drink actually lowers me..... now I count it as a food so I don't over do my calories... Kinda like a cold beer and tomato soup....

I'm a pumper and also taking Metformin. I have a glass or two of white Zin almost every evening. I find my BS may be a bit higher before bed but by morning, I am usually below 100.

Ok I am drinking my favorite red wine ( Lambrusco). I will be surpized if this actually brings down my BS in the morning. They are usually 130ish. OMG I will enjoy this if it actually works.

I def find a glass or two of red wine in the evening leads to better numbers. When I don't have it there is a noticible difference. The key is moderation. Too much and you risk hypo...esp with the sulph's(!!) Also I do worry that Met acts on the liver as does alcohol so the combination, in larger quantities in the long term may not be so good!
Enjoy!!

Stacey, how about, you do a test with red wine, it's suppossed to help too.
I drink a glass of wine once in a while.

i dont like red wine, plus, i dont have access to a liquor store that close

does red wine ruin if not drunken with in a certain amount of time?

im not a big drinker, never was, so id prefer to just soak it and get it over with, as far as the wine thats something you sip, eeeeww, now if it was smirnoff ice thats something i could sip, but i figured liquor would be better since its quick and easy nothing to deal with, and it doesnt ruin

I thought the problem with metformin mixed with alcohol was the increased risk of lactic acidosis. That said most of the stuff I read said it was ok in moderation if you have normal liver function (moderation being a glass of wine or beer, not a bottle or a night on the town). mho only. I'm not a doctor, so don't anyone sue me! 3 links (of many follow).
