I am confused by a diag. that I got today does anyone know anything about the pituatary gland disorder and its effect on diabetes? I have to have a MRI and some other tests. Boy I bet this is going to be expesnsive....

the Dr said that she did not want me to be "worried yet" but she was "concerned".... Ok I am offically stressed.....

Oh ya... I am a 47 yo who is lactating... last child 21 years ago

Diabetes insipidus is completely different from Diabetes mellitus. Read here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_insipidus) about it. Diabetes insipidus is something that happens with a lot of different diagnoses. My daughter has histiocytosis, in which one of the symptoms is DI...

It really has nothing to do with the diabetes we talk about here.

I was diag with T2 but we have been unable to find the right insulin to regulate.. what does this mean with DI? does this mean i was misdiagonosed? or can you have both?

I'm actually wondering if you're not T2, but more of a T1.5. I went back to your intro post and noticed that you said that you've lost a lot of weight. This is something that generally happens to a T1 (also 1.5) before diagnosis... Also you talk of having numbers in the 500s, which from what I know of T2 is very uncommon (though someone here will correct me if I'm wrong).

Could you ask your doc to do the antibody tests and see?

You may also have DI, however there are 4 types of DI so further tests would need to be done to see which of them you have (well, okay you probably won't have the gestational only kind...unless you are pregnant!)

With DI, you are making diluted urine, so any ketone test you do will give you a false negative because it's too diluted to register on the strip (I know, we've tried on my 3 year old, she does spill ketones, but doesn't have DM). The other problem with DI is that you'll get dehydrated really quickly and tend to have a high sodium level. Sodium levels of more than 150 are bad...190 and you're dead. Stay hydrated!

The interesting point that you bring up is that you are lactating. Your last child was 21 years ago? Could this be menopause starting? My neighbor is going through menopause now (started about 3 years ago) and about a year into it, she started lactating too...

I'm sure that you can have both DM and DI, though it is pretty rare to see. You're just special! LOL

Actually I know very little about 1.5 I need to learn more. I have been diag with peri menopause. Until today a thought the minimal lactose was normal.. who knew.. as far as been pregnant.. we could hail the second coming,... LOL I had any possibility of that cut off 20 years ago...

I have never heard of a pituitary connection before.. The possibility of a tumor thing scares the dookie out of me, but on the other hand it finally made more sense. When I gave my meter and showed numbers in the 490's with the new meds (and trust me no partaking of cake ) she understood the terrible fatigue and headaches I have been having. I also showed the numbers under 200 in the last few days as long as I had NO Carbs. I had a super small amount of fruit and went right to 356 today. I have been testing every hour and logging what I have intake.

I just hope this is not just another grasping at straws. I am soooo tired of it all. This is why I usually give up. I told her about this site and she thought it was a great resource for support an knowledge.

I'm sure that you have tried, but have you had a complete blood workup? I'm talking even the weird, less than "normal", tests that are available? I know that you don't have insurance, so that's probably not something that's in the budget... but it sure would help those of us who can read lab reports to help you out more.

I don't believe that pituitary DI has to do with tumors. It's mostly idiopathic, meaning that there is no known cause for it. There may be an underlying pituitary problem, which is why further blood work is needed. You could have an underactive pituitary gland, which is something that is very common, and DI is just a symptom of that.

I'd really recommend a complete blood workup though. Especially to look at your immunities, your blood factors, things like that. I'd also like to know what your most recent A1c is.

I'm concerned that your doctor is giving you a bunch of diagnoses without looking at the "whole" you. You know what I mean? It seems like every time you go in to see him, you get a new diagnosis of something scary... Maybe get a new doctor?
