hi all. My name in Tim and I have a brain tumor. my steroids I have been taking to control my inflammation ( Predinsone ) have given me diabetes. My problem is that my symptoms for my tumor often mimic my diabetic problem, and its been hard knowing whats going on.

my numbers are no that bad, I guess the highest I get with no meds of any kind ( for the sugar) is around 165. My lows are about 78 to 88.

when I was on higher dose of steroid I was on insulin both lantus and humalog,
but now they said to take myself off insulin for 1 week ( endocrinlogist ) and keep a log of my numbers. I seee the nurse again on Monday and the doctor on Friday. I get really sick feeling sometimes and my fingers turn cold. I use a one touch ultra meter.

is this normal? Has anyone else been told to go cold turkey off off insulin this way?

Hi Tim....and Welcome! I'm new here too and I wish I had some good advice for you. I'm confident there are people here who will have some good suggestions and advice for you. I'm just not confident or knowledgeable enough in diabetes to be able to give advice.
But....my thoughts and prayers shall be with you tonight! And welcome from me!

Hello Tim, it's Very Nice to meet you. :)

I'm Type 1 not 2(no one would suggest I stop using Insulin,
obviously). I don't know much about brain tumors or how
they mimic Diabetes. I guess I'm mainly here to say Welcome
to the Forums. Welcome.:wavey:

I'm sorry to hear of the state you are in. How frustrating with
not knowing what's causing the symptoms. Do they know what
caused the tumor? Did they give you a prognosis?

You didn't say when the 165 occurred. If it was an hr. after eating,
then that's not bad. If it only happens occasionally, I don't feel that's
bad either. The lows you are experiencing are normal readings. Did
the Dr. actually say you were a Diabetic? Or did he/she only want
you on Insulin to keep your sugars down while you were on a high dose
of Pred. (which significantly raises blood sugar)? Since you were not on
much Insulin, it would be okay to go off it "cold turkey" with no problems.
I'm glad that they are keeping a close eye on you though and asked you
to log your sugars to make sure that you are okay. How often do you test?

This sick feeling you get, in what way? Many People get cold hands with
no Diabetes just other reasons. I'm assumung that you had your thyroid
thoroughly tested.

I've been on Pred. since last March. High doses for a while 'til I couldn't
stand the high doses of Insulin I had to take to try to keep up with the
Pred. and my sugars were still too high so I weaned myself down on the
Pred., just 'til the pain was somewhat bad but acceptable to me. Then
I tweaked my Insulin to match the Pred. That stuff is bad and you don't
"cold turkey" that stuff.

My Dad also got severe RA like me but him at age 68. The last yrs. of his
Life it got Very bad so he was put on Pred. which raised his sugars, of course.
He was not Diabetic though. The Dr's said if they stopped his Pred. then he
would go back to his normal sugar level. Both diseases will eventually kill ya.
So what choice? At least with the Pred. he wasn't in as much pain. I think
the highest his sugars were was 12.2, which I didn't like to see(I test everyone :) ),
but what choice. He was a few months away from 80 yrs. when he died of
congestive heart failure. He smoked since he was 12 yrs. I wouldn't want to
live that long anyway.

OMG, sorry I yapped so long. Welcome. :D
