View Full Version : Left over pump and supplies...

I've seen a couple other posts on this subject, but indefinite conclusions.
We have a 508 pump, and some various infusions sets and batteries left over.
Has anybody ever found a solution for these situations? Are there social service groups, senior centers, or others that could possibly use things of this nature?
I'm sure there are Minimed users that still have the 508, aren't there? It seems a shame to just discard them.
We always hear about people struggling to afford medications, and these items are not cheap by any means. And well within their shelf life. In prior situations like this I've never found a satisfactory answer, just wondering if any others might have.

I kept mine,I figure if the 715 breaks, I have a back-up pump until it is fixed. I do get free meters about once a year, and my GP takes them to Diabetes camp.

I know of several forum members that would like to get their hands on a pump.

I think we better keep the pump for a couple of weeks, just until we've received the statements. I also need to make another call about the shipment, I'll get a definite answer on the pump to be sure. Then we'll have the pump, the manual and even a VCR for the 508 to offer. So if you know someone that wants to be considered, please let me know.
Right now we have a full box of 42" sof-sets, MMT-315's, two sets of batteries, but only 3 Silhouette, MMT-371's to dispose of.

Selling pumps on Ebay is verboten by ebay policy. (forbidden)

I have purchased infusion lines & reservoirs on Ebay. I have seen pumps for sale there as well. This might be a new policy of theirs. Craig's List is another possibility.

Doesn't Smiths Medical give you a discount on a new pump when you turn in an old one. Don't know if it's true, but I guess it is worth looking into.

I know of two organizations that will accept donated pumps. One is the Charles Ray Foundation: Charles Ray III (http://www.charlesray.g12.com/)
The other is Insulin Pumpers: Diabetes and Insulin Pump Therapy for adults and children with diabetes (http://www.insulin-pumpers.org/)
I think you can get a tax deductible receipt from both places. This will allow your pump to be given to someone who needs it, and save you from any legal gray areas.

I would caution anyone on donating to some sites. I do know for a fact that one isn't an officially sanctioned Diabetic site and all the donated money is a scheme to keep the one person who started the site employed. He's in it for the money. The more the better. The workers are all volunteers and don't get paid. No wonder he has to do so many fundraisings. None of the supplies he gets donated from pump companies ever come into Canadian hands and yet lots of money is from Canadian people. All we do is pay his wage! I prefer to donate to official sites where there is a guarantee or the public can view what percentage of the money is being used to help diabetics.
Just want to make you think before donating money or pumps or supplies to those who are in it for the money!!!
This is my humble opinion.

Thanks to everybody for the info, this is exactly what we were after.
If I had to do it over, I'd probably have kept my 508...

Do tell...why would you have kept it?
I am about to mail mine back in for the $500 rebate, and I can't tell you how attached (figuratively) we get to our pumps--even when they are replaced with better ones.

I just miss the 508, and my close friends claim I complained less about my pump when I had the "old pump". I figure I would probably complain less if the Cozmo came in a case/clip that actually worked, wasn't uncomfortable, didn't break after 20 days, etc.
They didn't give me a $500 rebate but rather $500 toward supplies, etc. It worked out okay for me since I have to meet an out-of-pocket deductible each year to satisfy insurance.
I hate to keep bashing on my Cozmore...I don't know if I had kept my 508 that I wouldn't have gone back to it, but sometimes I wish I could find out.
