yesterday I took my husband to the E.R. for chest pains. They took his blood and it turns out his bsl was 218. They told us he had diabetes and to be seen by a doctor today. By the way he is 34 and weighs 143. He could not get in to the endo. today but saw an internal medicine doctor who took blood work and sent him home. She then later called to say that his test that measured his bsl for the past 3 months was within the normal range. He seems to have all symptoms of diabetes except high blood pressure and being overweight. He actually can't gain weight. Today his highest bsl level was 165. He also has a very low tolerance for alcohol just within the last 6 months. He will have 2 drinks and he will act out of his mind and then pass out and will have memory loss the next day. My question is... can a non diabetes person ever have a bsl of 218? And why are his levels not that bad today? We are totally confused

Sounds like a complicated one. At only 143 does he eat well? Did they give a cause for the chest pains?

The 3-month test, or HA1C, not being high is curious as are the fluctuating BGs. BGs don't go that high in non-diabetics. It seems he's in early stages and honemooning - pancreas is still producing some insulin. If I was to bet, I'd say you caught it in the early stages of type 1.

Anyway, welcome aboard. Hope all goes well: it should as it's a very manageable condition. This is a great spot for learning. Read up and ask away. Help is available in chat too.:bandit:

He eats well and he is always hungry. They never diagnosed the chest pain. he explains it as more of pressure on his chest. At first they thought it might be anxiety but it has been non stop since yesterday. xanax is not helping either. Could it be his pancreas being inflamed or something? Is there anything that we can do before thursday to make him feel better so he can go back to work?

Do you know what the actual number on the test was? I ask because I have heard of doctors saying that when maybe it wasn't so normal.

I am sorry but it does sound as if he may be diabetic. I assume they checked to make sure there was no heart attack or anything like that.

As for alcohol, it can cause low blood sugar so there's a possibility that could be causing his strange symptoms. It's impossible to know without having blood sugar tests, though.

Newsflash... Not all diabetics are overweight and have high blood pressure. In fact, weight loss can be a sign of diabetes. Sounds like he needs to a competent doctor. The sooner he can see an endo the better. Good luck and welcome aboard...

When I was first diagnosed, the reason I went to the doctor was because my heart was "achy" and I would wake up at night with it racing. I was afraid I was having heart problems and wanted to get it checked out. At that time, my fasting BS was 215. My A1C was really elevated and I got my diagnosis. I also was so tired and it seemed I was always hungry. I had attributed it to stress, but then got the diagnosis of diabetes. Apparently, it can cause all kinds of symptoms. I was also given Xanax, but didn't see much difference, so I stopped it. My symptoms resolved when I got my levels under control.

Welcome to the forum, I know you'll find it a great source of information and support. Your husband is lucky to have such a supportive spouse...my husband has been my rock through all the frustrations and stresses. Hang in there.

My wife woke me up yesterday morning with chest pains, pressure on her chest. She had apparently had them all night and didn't say anything. She was also sick to her stomach and had the runs. No heart attack, just a nasty bug or something. Wasn't food poisoning or I would have had it, too. Could he be sick? Sounds like a possibility he might have diabetes, but he could also have a bug or something in addition to the diabetes.
