I average about 60 before meals and about 120-180 after meals. Once I had a high of 211 after a meal. I have been taking Avandaryl now since April 2006 and noticed that I have gained about 10 pounds from 109lbs to 119lbs.
How do I correct my highs on the days that I can't control myself from eating what I'm not suppose to? Any suggestions?

Bad news! - only way of getting rid of excess sugar that your medication can't cope with is to burn it off with excercise - unless you decide to go onto insulin.

It's the Avandaryl that's causing you to gain weight. I'm not a doc, but I'm SURE that's the cause. It's a known side effect. Ask your doc about other meds. And not anything with Avandia or Actos in it either. (same family of meds) I was taking Actos for about 8 months (along with metformin and glipizide), gained wieght, didn't change a thing diet wise. I could not get the weight to come back off! I went off Actos (on my own) and am now slowly losing that gained weight. My dad was on Avandamet .... almost the same story! He too gained weight that he could not lose. Didn't change a thing diet wise. He's eaten well and kept in good weight for well over 30 years before this! He also ended up having congestive heart failure, that I can't prove was caused by the Avandamet, but I'll go to my grave believing that was the cause. He's now on metforimn, glipizide and lantus.
As for treating highs. There really is no exact way to treat a high. Just eat foods that are very low or have no carbs, until your BGL comes back down to normal. Things like salads, eggs, lean meats ... and try to keep them lower in fat and calories as well (so as to not gain more weight)
Now my dad says that if he's running high, he can eat a salad and BGL will come down. Also, drinking some beer, he says, helps him too.
Good Luck!
