When your sugars are high, but you're starving. My fasting numbers are too high 150ish but I'm hungry in the morning. It's not always feasable to have just protein because I'm at work. Should I eat something? Or just wait until lunch?

Hi mindylee.
Eat things that are very low or have no carbs in them. Things like salads, eggs, meats. Don't starve yourself, as this can make your BGL actually go higher, because your body goes into "starvation mode" ... since it's not getting food, it thinks it needs energy so it spits out MORE glucose, which in turn raises your BGL even more! It's a vicious cycle!

I second Harold -- definitely eat before going to work, no matter what your morning fasting reading is. You might be like me: if I wake up early (but don't get out of bed right away), or am particularly stressed (which is often), my liver begins dumping glucose and my initial reading is high. If I eat, the liver stops dumping and things settle down.
Case in point: two days ago I woke up with a reading of 130 mg/dl (my highest fasting reading since December 2005). I had my usual bowl of Cheerios with some fruit and soy milk. Two hours later, I was down to 105 mg/dl. I can't explain it, but that's almost always the way it works for me. Experiment and see what works for you.

I'm with the rest. A little and often is a good guideline. If you allow yourself to starve then, depending on what medication and dose levels you are on, all that happens is that your liver pumps out more glucose and your sugar levels go up - unless your work is very physical in which case you might burn the sugar off.

ALWAYS EAT! do not skip meals just because you wake up high, he what you would normally eat, the key thing here is not to go up more than 50 points after a meal, try to eat lowcarby if your worried about going up too much higher....especially if you have just been diagnosed.... you dont need to go down too quickly, just eat as you normally would....

Make sure you always eat...even if your numbers are a high. I keep protein drinks at work for when I don't have time to fix an egg. They don't require refrigeration and aren't too bad. I use the EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control shakes in chocolate fudge.... 1 gm impact carbs (4 total carbs), 15 gm protein and 100 calories. They are available at Sams or WalMart, and any pharmacy..though they are more expensive there. They come in chocolate, chocolate fudge, strawberry, mocha, and french vanilla.
Also, South Beach bars are a quick alternative. 15 carbs, 140 calories 10 gm protein, 3 fiber. Stick on in your purse/backpack, and you're ready to go!
