I am planning a vaca to Disney world. I am relativly new on the pump and haven't been to any amusement parks or water parks with my pump, but plan on doing both in Disney World. ANyone have problems going on rides? What should I do with my pump for the water park?

make sure it's safely attached. I stick it in my front pocket when I think it might be bounced of my belt clip.

...if you had an Animas pump, you wouldn't have to worry about the water. I swim with mine on all the time in my pool. Other pump companies offer a waterproof case.

good luck and have fun!

the cozmo is also supposed to be waterproof (as long as it hasn't been damaged or cracked, but the monitor attachement isn't waterproof). i've been tubing the past two years and have worn my pump both times with no problems. but my version of tubing is where you leisurely float down a river on an innertube while drinking beverages. the pump does get wet but not for extended periods of time.

if you're really worried about your pump getting wet i guess something you could always do is disconnect for an hour, take a bolus, disonnect, bolus, etc. but that probably leaves you with the problem of where you can safely put your $6000 device while you're not wearing it. i'd say as long as you're pump is one that's supposed to be waterproof and isn't damaged it should be okay to go in the water.

Just make sure when you wear it on rides that you don't get it "squashed" as well. Mainly the spot where the tubing comes out as you could then go quite a few hours with no insulin wondering why your BG continually rises.

I absolutely would not wear a pump in a water park. My son is the manager of aquatics at Sunsplash in Roseville. The filters in the pools and even in the Lazy River can be the end of a pump. If you were to lose your pump on a slide or a ride, the pump would most likely be damaged badly if even recovered by the park crew. I would take off your pump and use one of the lockers to keep it safe. Use Lantus or test every couple of hours and leave your pump in a safe place. As far as Disney World goes, you should be safe wearing your pump on most rides so long as there is not a lot of bumping or smashing. If you are concerned at all, take it off and locker it.

I was told by Animas to disconnect while going on amusement park rides. If I recall, they even suggested having someone that is not on the ride, hold your pump for you. It's in the pump owner's manual I believe.

That's true, but 4 years and over 200 roller coaster rides here with it on and I've never had a problem. I think the reason is something to do with centrifical force and possibly forcing more insulin into you. I've never had a problem, but it's one of those take it as you wish events.

I've never been struck by lightening either, but that doesn't mean I play golf in the middle of a lightening storm...

Thanks guys! I have a minimed pump and it is not waterproof. I think for the water rides I may take it off and test and bolus every two hours. I looked at the waterproof case, but that leaves me with where I would clip it to in a bathing suit.....Hopefully they have whole day rentals instead of the ones that make you pay everytime you open and relock it...
I never would have thought of reading the users manual!! (I never read manuals...)

Yes they have whole day rentals. I just got back from Disneyworld.
They are usually located right after you enter the park. I used them many times, not for my pump though, as I did not go on the water rides.

or just lantus, and then connect the pump and bolus for meals...

I live near Disneyland and have been to the park several times since I got my insulin pump. I haven't had any troubles what so ever riding rides with the pump. I think I would be more nervous leaving my pump in a locker than riding with it. Just make sure it's in a safe place and that you check the line for kinks after the ride.

As far as the water park goes, I would personally detach. Your not going to be wearing a normal amount of clothers and there isn't really a great place to safely clip the pump. I would just get a locker I guess. I haven't gone to any water parks since I got the pump and to be honest it kinda seems like a big hassle. :(

I just got back from Disney. I went on almost every ride in the Magic Kingdom. I wore my Cozmo (sans Cozmonitor) on my shorts the whole time with a 40% temp rate running. It got wet. It went on rollarcoasters. It was all good.

Just FYI the minimeds are not advertised as waterproof as you know. If you read deep into their sales literature, they say its just as "waterproof" as any other pump, but they refuse to advertise it as such with the fear of giving one of us a false sense of security. Even the slightest crack in the housing will leak (and it can happen through a crack you never knew was there). I thought that was quite a bit of honesty for a sales pitch this day and age.

I was told by my trainer to disconnect on rollercoasters. The forces involved make the pump go crazy as she put it. I agree, its probably just the centrifugal forces moving the plunger.
