hello everyone. i'm new with diabetes...well, my son is. he's 4...and we've known since dec. 1, 2006. at the time his blood sugar was 303...within 8-9 hours of partial fasting (he was crying, we gave him a banana, how do you deny a 4 year old food?) it was 100. he was in the hospital for 1 day...the first endrocrinologist swore he didn't have diabetes. his a1c test was a little over 7...2 weeks later (dr. wanted to retest, prove out false positive) it was around 6. he then wanted us to start lantus - even though his fasting sugars were 75-100. the first doctor didn't even show us how to give shots. the new doctor wants us to control things with a diet - but the dietician says that's completely stupid. i'm very confused, but hopefully someone here can give me some input

Just read your other post. Sheeeeeesh poor lil guy! I really don't know if they're related! Sounds as tho the docs haven't a clue what so ever either!!!Get more opinions!! Don't give up!
I do know what the hydronephrosis is ... and know that can be a really nasty situation! Our daughter just lost our grandson 10 days ago (she was 5 1/2 months along) to something that involved that (It was mulitple reasons, but that was one of them).
I will keep y'all in my thoughts and prayers!

Ash & Son, welcome to the Forums. keep reading some of the posting here.
Do you have a BG meter? if not, probably you should get one right away, so you can test him several times in the 24 hrs period & take those results to an endocronologist or ask your doc to give you a referral.
You should act fast.
OK parents on the Forums, give your opinions to Ash.

dan - yes, we have a meter...actually 3 (hospital gave us one, insurance, and dietican). we have an endocronologist...and he's not really helped any yet. the dietician helped more - and she suggested that it could be something genetic - that it could be something that could be treated now so he won't develop diabetes later...if that makes sense...
and, thanks ladytaz, karen :)

Hi, I know it is difficult.
In my case, though, I have been diabetic for 26 years and lived a happy and fulfilling life. I have two daughters (4 & 7), none of whom have diabetes.
Take some time to learn about it. Give yourself three months.
One of my older brothers is an MD, and he mentioned when I got it that the until I was a teenager it would be fine. That is true. The only "pain" with diabetes is low sugar, and nowadays with better insulin is less common.
I use Levemir (rather than Lantus) which is available in Europope and the US and it has significantly improved my quality of life.
Everything will be just fine
