I am experiencing tingling lips and tongue just about all day, every day. It is driving me nuts. All the research I have done shows tingling lips and tongue to be a symptom of going low. Well, here I am two hours after dinner, my BG is 110, never saw it go higher than 115 and I am tingling.

My BG rarely seems to go below 90 anymore, fasting BG is between 90 and 110, usually close to 100. The tingling occurs about half an hour after I eat and can last all **** day. I had bacon for breakfast with a glass of milk laced with cinnamon. I had breast of chicken for lunch with brocolli in a sauce. I had black-eyed peas with bacon for dinner, one bowl, with a glass of milk laced with cinnamon. All in all a pretty low carb day. The only thing I can think of is that my body thinks I am going low and tingles. It doesn't seem to matter if I've gone high with my BG or not, when the numbers start to go down, the tingling begins.

Here are my particulars:
I am 43 and was diagnosed with diabetes (type 2) 8/16/06.
I am overweight, have been for years.
I am on 1000mg of metformin twice a day (total of 2000mg).
I initially lost weight, exercised and brought my BS way down.
Fasting BS was 255 at diagnosis, was recently down to a fasting 89.
A1c was 12.5 at diagnosis, now down to 5.7.
Insulin was measured at 27 when diagnosed, down to 14 (want it below 10).
I have lost some weight and have been very good about exercising and watching what I eat, though I haven't been too awfully good between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Does anybody else experience this?

Thanks,
Roger

I get it with a low, and occassionally when I am dropping quickly, but not just for no reason. I think this might be one to discuss with your dr...

Roger,
Hi there...:hello:
The only time I have both tingling on my tongue and lips is when I have eaten something that I'm allergic too.... Example: Onions or a few Dorittos.... When I took the Allergy test they just about laughed at me... I'm basically allergic to everything in this world.....lol
Honey, I don't know if this is going to help you but this is my experience...
Good Luck...

Hi there Roger! I also get the numb tongue and lips when I'm low, but like pinkytricia said, maybe you've developed an allergy? Definately mention it to your doc:)

I've never been allergic to anything, except maybe hard work  but this gives me an avenue to explore next time I see the Dr.

Do you usually eat cinnamon every day? Cinnamon is known for bring BS down... could you be bringing it to far down by using the cinnamon?
Or at least that's what I've heard people say about cinnamon... just a thought.

Are you on any other meds that could be causing it? Some antidepressants, etc. may have that effect.

All I take right now is:

Metformin 1000mg twice per day
cinnamon in milk twice per day, sometimes
a magnesium, calcium & zinc supplement
EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid)
Sublingual B12, Folic Acid and Biotin vitamin pill

I can't tell a real difference in my BG if I take cinnamon or not, to be honest. I do it because it might help, it's cheap and it's not too yucky. I don't think my BG is going too low. My fasting BG was 93 this morning at 6:30am. After a breakfast of black-eyed peas and bacon (if it's good for dinner, it is good for breakfast is my motto) plus a small cornbread muffin with butter, two hours later my mouth and lips were still lightly tingling with a BG of 126. :frown:

I had tingling before being diagnosed, just not so often. The metformin in the list above is the only thing I have taken consistently since being diagnosed. The rest I started taking afterwards. I wonder if it could be the metformin?

I get it with a low, and occassionally when I am dropping quickly, but not just for no reason.

I've often wondered if it is my numbers dropping quickly. Maybe I drop quickly, though when I check it doesn't seem to go down much. How much is quickly? Probably different for different people, but I wonder what people consider quick. Also, the tingling seems to moderate or disappear when I exercise and I've seen my BG levels go down by 36 points in 15 minutes while walking fast (I'm too heavy to jog yet).

Any other thoughts? I appreciate the suggestions.

Roger

Hi Roger, sorry you're having this! Have you considered that a nerve in your neck may be pinched? This can cause that tingly sensation in your face/mouth/lips/tongue, etc. I would call your doctor and ask him/her about it, and see what he/she thinks. I hope you resolve this soon, as I'm sure it's quite annoying, along with being scary too!

Hi Ladytaz, it is quite annoying. Funny thing, for the first time in 2 months my fasting BG was in the low 80s this morning. I hardly tingled all day. I am seeing my chiropractor soon, if it is a pinched nerve, he will take care of it. Can't wait. The chiropractor is the one Dr. I don't mind seeing. I always leave feeling better.

Hi Mydear (gotta love that handle!), I will be talking to the Dr. soon. I am also going to check the allergy angle.

Regards,
Roger
