Hello
I was diagnosed type 1 with autoimmune hepititus about a month ago.
I have been reading through the forums but have not seen much about other people being put on steriods.
This is a wonderful site and I look forward to browsing through it.
Thank you all in advance.

A lot of times steroids are prescribed to combat inflammations, so my *GUESS* is that they prescribed steroids to fight inflammation of your liver tissues. Sometimes it is a short-term treatment intended to quickly correct the condition, and then there is a change in the longer-term treatment. I'm sure you will want to get more info from your doctor(s).
There is a huge amount to learn as a new Type 1 (I was just diagnosed last April), be sure to ask lots of questions of your docs and nurses (and us also). The best news is that you can get control of this new condition, and you are your own best ally in being healthy.

I was given a steroid when I fell into some poison ivy a few years back and within 12 hours my blood sugar was running in the 500 range. It took another 12 hours for me to decide the steroid was the problem and that I should stop taking it. For at least three days after that, I couldn't get my blood sugar below about 200.

HI & Welcome Mickeyz.
You'll find for most diabetics, steroids can and will raise blood sugars way above normal range. I've only been on a steroid once, and refuse to take them again.

I have a lung problem so I have to take steroids about 3 times a year for about 3 weeks at a time...yes my sugars go up but I eat different when I am on the steroids to help combat it but the high doses are what lead to trouble...I wish they could find something else instead of steroids for diabetics!

As others mentioned, steroids can raise bg significantly. You may need to take extra correction boluses to compensate.
Good luck and welcome aboard :wavey:

If you are on steroids you need to increase your basal as well depending on the dosage of steroid and time on them
