I was diagnosed t2 about 2 weeks ago. Doctor wants me to go to classes, but I guess it's not going to be anytime real soon. Meanwhile, I'm kind of floundering as to what I should do or not do, aside from taking the pills every morning. There are a lot of books out there, but I would rather have a recommendation than just buy something when there might be a better one I could spend my money on. If that makes sense.

when i found out in october that i had diabetes... i found more out on the net than i would have ever learned in a book.... plus you take bits an pieces of of it and try it for YOU and not listening to just one side, it generally helps you learn whats best for just YOU.

The First Year Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed
by Gretchen Becker

I have this book and found it pretty useful.

Amazon.com: The First Year Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed: Books: Gretchen Becker (http://www.amazon.com/First-Year-Type-Diabetes-Essential/dp/1569245460/sr=8-1/qid=1169086435/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0541932-2775056?ie=UTF8&s=books)

I second the recommendation for the book by Becker. I got it about a month after I was diagnosed in December 2005 and have read it at least three times in the past year. There's nothing controversial in what she describes and suggests -- just a lot of common sense and encouragement. It's a great book, a great resource, and a great comfort.

I have been watching on ebay for Dr. Bernstiens 5 Audio CD's and illustrative 28 page book. It's 150$ on amazon and will probably end up buying it there if I don't see it on ebay within the month.

I also recommend the Gretchen Becker book. I use it all the time. Have read it cover to cover, and now refer to it frequently.

Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution is the only book that tells you how to achive normal blood glucose. Not that I have actually achieved this. But it helps to be pointed in the right direction.

I am hoping the audio cd version is different. MarkInTN posted an audio link by dr bernstien about how elevated BGL's causes complications and it was extremely informative. I am hoping the CD set I get is similar to that. Hearing the guy talk; all I can say is he knows a lot a bout diabetes.

David Mendosa is a medical writer and does book reviews. He also has one of the best informative web sites online dealing diabetes. Books on Diabetes

Yes.. Brian I agree 100% The guy { Richard K. Bernstein MD } ... should have been dead by now... The way he was eating and all and being a diabetic....Type1 even...
My Mami {wanna be doctor } has the CD's only and Yes... they are good...
What I would really want would be a medical interview session with him in person... lol... I need to save up alot of pennies to do that though...:1eye:

Ohhh... Good luck Misty ... Try the book if you can...

The other day I was working in a library. I came across a fairly new medical book and I couldn't believe the advice it gave for diabetics. It had a big picture of a huge plate of pasta, and it said, for diabetics, eat lots of complex carbs like rice and pasta! It gave totally misleading information. So do be careful about some medical advice.

I started reading the Atkins book. Not so much for the diet (I am following a low carb diet just not to that extreme) but for the information on Type 2. It has been a great tool to understand insulin resistance etc. I would encourage anyone looking for more info to get it.

I liked Cheating Destiny: Living with Diabetes, America's Biggest Epidemic by James Hirsch. This is not a book about diabetes advice. It is written by a man who has Type 1 diabetes and who finds out that his son has it too. It's kind of a mixture of his personal experiences along with some scientific information.

Yes, adding the aural learning modality definitely enriches the learning experience. He did a few free teleseminars last year that may give you a better idea of what to expect. Google bernstein teleseminar Dr Mong.

Another vote for this book.

Between this book and this forum, I learned how to live and thrive with the big D. I went from freaked out to acceptance and adapting with confidence to my new life. I am not perfect (yet) but my last A1C was 5.7 so I guess I am on the right track.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I just ordered the Gretchen Becker book from Amazon. I was also going to get Richard Bernstein's book, but I notice that he has an updated version coming out next month, so I will wait and get that one. I will see if I can look at the other ones mentioned at the library or bookstore.

Check out your local library. Mine has a large selection of books on diabetes. A good place to start then if you find something you want to keep you can then buy it. Nancy

Another vote for Bernstein's book! Even if the diet doesn't gel with you, the book is worth having for the general info on the disease

Yeah! Finally they mention one I've read. I have the Austrialian Edition. Probably all the same info but BSL is written in 18.0 instead of 180; weights in Kilo instead of lbs. etc.

Great book it actually made the Big D sound less scary. Living with D instead of the OMG approach we are overwhelmed with in the beginning.

It was chatty while actually laying out the entire situation and how to take the control of our own health, while being clear about the consiquences.

What's more, I got it cheap off eBay. Bonus.

Cheers
