View Full Version : Cleo vs. other straight-in sets

I've been using Cleos for the past 5 months, but it now looks like I'm going to have to go back to Comforts or another set due to problems with the Cleo. I haven't had any blockages, but my blood sugars have been much more erratic on the Cleo.
Sometimes, my BS will go up to the 225-250 and be only partially reponsive to corrections for many hours (for example, a 3 unit correction that should bring me down by 135 only brings me down by 20), then a few hours later everything seems fine again and I respond to corrections.
Any thoughts on whether this a Cleo issue, or typical for some people on straight-in sets? I very much like the flexibility and ease of the Cleo and hate to give it up, but I can't take the uncertainty. I've been back on Comforts for the past 2 weeks and the BSs are much improved.
Are there any other straight-in sets you would recommend instead? The Comfort works, but I'm not a big fan of angled sets. Ideally it would be a straight-in set that can rotate, but am open to any suggestions on which ones are worth trying with my Cozmo.
(By the way, has anyone used the SimpleChoice Twist or the Orbit 90?)
Thanks,
Carl
Animas has something similar to the Cleo that is called inset:
Animas Corporation - Inset Infusion System (http://www.animascorp.com/products/pr_infusion.shtml)
We are looking into using it due to all the blockages we get
with the Cleo.

I used the Cleos for over six months and finally gave up. Blockages, not sticking, coming apart and skin irritation. My rep at Smith-Medical said I stuck it out longer than most.
My doctor sent a prescription for samples to Animas and they sent me some 9mm and some 6mm Insets. I requested some of both so they sent me six samples. I like the 6mm very much. I saw my endo yesterday and he is going to write a prescription for me to switch. I called Smith-Medical and told them to cancel future shipments. I have just received my 3 month supply of Comfort Shorts so my first shipment of Insets will be in April. I am allergic to adhesive and have had a hard time for the year I've been on the pump. With the Insets, I use only an antibiotic soap in the shower and put the adhesive directly on my skin without any prep. I was expecting major irritation but got none. Just a little red after three days and it goes away in a couple of days with Neosporin and the set sticks just fine.
Have your doctor fax a prescription to Animas for samples and they will get right back to you. The samples were sent third day UPS.

I have been wanting to ask this very same question. Until recently I have always used the angled comforts. I got my hands on some of the straight-in Orbit 90 sets, and found that If my levels get above 200, it takes about twice as much insulin to bring it down. At first I thought it might be something to do with a change in me, but I switched back and forth a couple of times between the two, and found it takes much more insulin to bring me down with this straight-in set.
I was just fixin to check into getting some Cleo's , but it sounds like you have a similar response to them.

My experience exactly - but had blockages too. Tried for 3 months before switching to Comforts
Haven't tried other straight-in sets - so I can't say what was particular to the Cleo and what was straight-in sets. I just know that I get much more consistant results with the Comfort sets.

I'm fond of the Contact Detach metal needle 90 degree sets. I find them more comfortable than the insets, plus I've had the most consistency with them over any other set, even the comfort shorts, which I still use when putting sites in my thighs or arms. I use the Contacts in the abdomen and love handles.

We have great luck with the Quick sets. We tried a couple of Cleos, and my daughter could insert them herself which would have been great. She had trouble disconnecting though and we decided to stick with the Quick Sets that have worked so well for over 3 years. We used to go back and forth between the 6 and 9mm, but she gained a bit of weight and the 6's were causing problems. We never worry about a bad set using the serter. Manually inserting a straight in set was always a problem for me because it needs to be done quickly.
kind of bummed to hear so many people are having problems with the cleo's. i was going to swtich from quick sets to the cleos. i still have a sample i haven't tried yet. i'll probably try it for myself and see the the outcome is, but things don't sound very promising. i've been using 90º sets since the beginning so maybe i won't see much of a difference.

It's helpful to hear I'm not the only one with Cleo problems.
Ang, why were you going to switch from the Quick Sets? Any problems, or just wanting to see how Cleo compares?

I like the Insets. They are made by Unomedical, not Animas. Each comes with it's own inserter. They come in 23" and 43" length tubing and 6mm and 9mm cannulas.

I'm trying samples of the insets, but am finding they won't stick very well. I like the inserter though.

I've always used IV Prep with them. I am starting to notice the edges tend to curl up a bit still. I've heard of people having success with IV 3000.

At one of the symposiums, I was given about 3 samples to try....Since I've only used 3, I can't give an adequate assessment on them, but I did like the ones I used (the 9mm sets). Didn't have any problems with blockages or anything & wore the sets on average for about 3 days.
The insets are ok, too. I got a couple of samples of those, but for some reason, I liked the Cleos better. Each person & his or her body responds differently to sets, so again, don't take my word for it. The only way is to try & trial different sets. Companies are often pretty cool about offering samples. This will be the best way for you to see which one works best for your body type. :)
My personal favorites are still the needle variety sets (Rapid-Ds, Polyfin Bent Needles, etc.), as my body type seems to do best with them.

Cleos work for me, very well. Though I haven't tried anything else except during my saline trial (on a different pump) and hated the Sil that I used then...
i'm switching to the cleos from the quicksets so all my stuff can come from the same company. both medtronic and autocontrol (autocontrol sells the cozmo supplies here in canada) have minimum orders for pharmacies of $750 (or its a $25 or $10 charge). i don't meet the minimum $750 for either because i'm ordering separately. i was ordering on my own and then submitting the receipts to my insurance and provincial health care plan myself and then waiting for reimbursement. if i order through the pharmacy everything gets submitted to my insurance company and the province electronically so when i pick it up i pay 20% or nothing (if i've met my provincial deductible). i just got fed up with paying up front so i decided to get everything from autocontrol (since my reservoirs can't be ordered from medtronic), which means switching from quick sets to cleos. phew, that was a pretty long and drawn out explanation wasn't it?!?!
i'm trying a cleo out right now and its okay. i'm kind of not thrilled with how they disconnect, the quickset was much better. but i thought the cleo was easier to insert (i insert my quicksets manually).

I have been pumping since the 4th of January and have used Cleo's for all site changes except one, that was using a quickset. The Cleo's have been perfect, no pain on insertion and no discomfort while in.
The quickset on the other hand, hurt like **** going in and hurt while in, then when I took it out I got a gusher. When I looked at the cannula on the quickset, it was cut straight across, not cut diagonally like a needle or the cannula on the Cleo's. Maybe that is why it hurt so much.
Anyway, I am stuck with one full box and one box with 9 quicksets left......Only Cleo's for me.
