My doctor having me take this drug named Hydrochlorot once a day. It makes me go to the bathroom at least 20 times a day. It's weird I can drink fluids and right after I drink it I start wanting to pee. I take a whole pill. Can peeing to much a day cause kidney problems?

Thanks, Rob

Are you taking Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)? I've been taking it for several years and don't go nearly as often as you.

I took this for quite awhile and finally stopped when I was given lotrel 5/20. Instead of taking three blood pressure meds, I only take one. I did not have the issue with going a lot while taking it.

I take hydrochlorothiazide (shorten it to HCTZ--much easier). At first I went quite often (not twenty times a day though). It did settle down for me though. I just started Symlin and it does it to me worse than HCTZ ever did. (What wonderful conveersations we have on this forum. Good thing I feel at ease with you.):dancing2:

Is this drug a diaretic?

Yes Brian it is.... for some reason I didn't have any problems with it. I am sure it was the dose I was on. I am just happy to be down to one pill instead of three.

I just looked it up and found this:

Symptoms of overdose may include dry mouth; excessive urination

Athough it's probably not an overdose, I would speak to your DR about it if it becomes bothersome. Either that or wait it out to see if this is just temporary.

You say you take one pill, may I ask how many mg's that one pill is?

I take a 25 mg pill a day. I've talked to my doctor about the pill and she thinks it good I go to the bath many times a day. I asked her how can I work at a job going the bathroom so many times a day. She seemed to think this is part of being a Diabetic and no big deal.

In my humble uneducated opinion, I'd say that's TOO many times a day!

It is not just a part of being diabetic - it'll be a part of being a badly controlled diabetic with high blood sugars, sure, but a controlled diabetic should be able to have a normal life without having to pee constantly!

Some docs just need a push. Perhaps you need a chat again.. mention you don't find it acceptable and would like to try halving the pill.. or a gentler replacement.. or whatever suits you best.

Are they working for you as they should - apart from moving semi-permanently into the toilet?

Rob43, from the high A1c you report on another thread, it might be that your high blood sugar levels are also causing your kidneys to work overtime in an attempt to clear some of the sugar out of your body.
Could be both the diuretic and the high blood glucose are contributing to the many bathroom trips.

May I ask why your doctor put you on a diuretic Rob? Are you experienceing edema?

yes i take it its included in my diovan... and yes i go to peepee every hour on the hour lol.... and when i go back to the dr, im gonna have to get a note for my job, because they dont want us to have too much time off the phone

i actually prefer going that many times.... 1... i know that pee cant stay in me too long so there fore i shouldnt get so many urinay tract infections... 2. if my blood pressure pills dont have hctz in them they dont work.... another thing ive found is my blood pressure meds work better if i take them off a morning and not before bed....

some people can take them and better manage if they take them before bed.... if you can stand getting up a few times during the night

:hello: Hi everyone, I take a diruetic every day, it is the generic of Lasix called Furesimide. My dosage is 40mg once or twice a day, it really works well, and my heart don't pound on this drug, as it has in the past with other diuretics. I have 4 pit edema (I think that's what they call it), if I don't take the diuretic, then I could develop congestive heart failure, or pulmonary edema. I also have to take a potassium pill, every time I take a diuretic.

Hi, What is the big reason why doctors put people like me on a water pill a day? My doctor I had two years ago just told me the all people that take heart medicine and are diabetics need to take a water pill a day. This doctor of mine now still has me take this water pill a day to.

I take HCTZ for edema. I also take potassium and magnesium along with it. I don't seem to have to go as often as you do Rob but when I go I can fill a bucket. I would truly ask your Dr again. I believe it is your high bs that are contributing to your problem. Good Luck and let us know how you get along...

That's good to know. Does anyone know why this is? Can the heart medicine build up in the system, or stay in the system to long with out the dieuritc?

Are there any other diabetics on here that take heart medications?

I have information in my archives about hydroclorothiazide, being viewed as a possible "primary cause" of diabetes. I'll find it and post it here tomorrow.

The recommendation for diabetics is to use Lasix (furosimide), as a diuretic, and to no longer use hydro-chloro-thiazide. But don't expect all doctors to know this. The volume of medical knowledge is doubling every 3.5 years. Every month a blizzard of studies, findings, new discoveries, and recommendations are published. No one can keep up with it.

Rob: Have you had any problems with congestive heart failure that you know of? A lot of times, people who have this problem are put on a diuretic such as HCTZ to keep fluid from building up around the heart, thus making it work harder to pump. Have you had swelling in your extremities? Also, the urology group I work for puts people with a history of kidney stones due to increased sodium levels on HCTZ to make them empty more and not have such a sodium build-up that kidney stones form.

No matter what the reason you're on it, you shouldn't be urinating that many times a day.

Also, how're your potassium levels? Losing fluid that quickly could deplete your potassium and cause problems as well (hope I didn't miss this info in a previous post).

excerpt:
"I am wondering whether the HCTZ could have caused the diabetes. I have read a few studies from 1989-90 which associate thiazide drugs with the development of diabetes. See, for example, N.Eng.J.Med. 1989; 321:868-873. The studies concluded that thiazide drugs cause insulin resistance -- and may cause or significantly increase the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Subsequent articles criticized the studies' conclusions because the studies involved mostly overweight, older individuals who were taking HCTZ for high blood pressure (not for kidney stones). Thus, the critics concluded that most of the subjects who developed diabetes or glucose intolerance during HCTZ therapy would have developed it anyway and that the thiazides may have merely unmasked latent diabetes that was already in existence. However, despite these criticisms, the recently published Johns Hopkin Guide to Diabetes discusses thiazides as though they may cause diabetes".

Hi, I have no history of heart trouble but I do take 5 mgs of Alace a day for blood pressure. My past doctor just told me diabetes should take this water pill a day. I'm going to ask my present doctor why do I take this pill. Now I do have a history of Blood clots to the lungs caused by a DVT in my right leg.

Thanks, Rob

I take HCTZ 50 mg/day because I have edema in my legs due to poor circulation. It works great for me. My doctor switched me from Lasix because it was too harsh making me have to go about every 20 minutes for a couple of hours. With the HCTZ, which I take in the morning, I go pee pretty much like normal and it works all day long. When my BG is high, I have to go more often.

I have been taking hydrachlor and Altace for several years. No problems. I pee about 6 times per day. (Altace is for kidneys and BP.)

Are you completely emptying your bladder each time you pee? If not then that would certainly cause you to go more frequently. A urologist can easily determine if you are emptying your bladder appropriately. If you are completely emptying your bladder each time and still going that often then perhaps you do not need the water pills or can get another pill with lower dosage. Good luck!

My heart doctor put me hydrochlorot 25mg about 8 years back
because I was having a problem with fluid swelling in my feet and legs which is not good for the heart. I'm also dealing with diabeties and lung problems. This drug also helps in lowering blood pressure.

I've been taking HCTZ 25mg QD for several years. In my case, it was prescribed to help lower my blood pressure.

HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention.

HCTZ treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or kidney disorders, or edema caused by taking steroids or estrogen. HCTZ is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It may be used alone or with other medicines.

Didn't your doctor tell you why he was prescribing this medication? And if he didn't, why didn't you ask him?
