Hello all,

Very glad to become a member of this group. I am 80 years old and a retired electrical engineer. I have been a type 2 for about 6 years and was lucky to just be able to control my diabetes with 2.5 mg of glyburide for about 5 years. Last spring I contacted Lyme disease which wasn't diagnosed for about 4 months. One doctor put me on Predisnone which knocked my blood sugar for a loop. This is behind me now and I now able to keep my morning fasting sugar in the 125 mg/dl range with 5 mg of glipizide per day. I spit the 5mg tablet in the morning and take 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the afternoon.
This tends to even out the variation.

Before bed sometimes I have blood sugars as high as 180 mg/dl and I wonder if this is a bad sign and should I try to get better control. In the morning it is back in the 125 range.

I have a lot of hobbies and like to keep busy. I probably could use more exercise.

Hope to spend more time reading these posts which contain a lot of pragmatic and useful material.

Joe L.

Hi Joe! :hello: Welcome to DF!

My guess is that being 180 at bedtime is a tad on the high side. When was the last time you've eaten something before bedtime and what was it that you ate? It could be something as simple as changing your night time snack? OR you may need more glipizide. Maybe 5 in the moring and 5 at night. How often are you testing?

Joe, I'm a great believer in exercise and good food. There's only one way to find out if it works and that is to give it a try. Now I don't know if you are able to exercise. I would think, if you can, that a little walk would be excellent for you. You'll know how far you can go yourself. It might help stabilize your night time high. Exercise should help. I wouldn't worry about your morning readings. They are not at all bad.

Hi Joe:
Welcome to DF. Hope you find it helpful.

With your evening readings being so high, perhaps you should try to make sure your evening meal is more "low-carb." Have something like green beans and chicken with salad or something like that. Save your higher-carb foods for earlier in the day when you're apt to be moving about more. I try to eat a higher protein b-fast and dinner and it helps keep the levels pretty stable.

I don't eat as much at night, as i'm not as active by then.

Again welcome!
