View Full Version : Not enough Lantus??

Recently I went out and had a fair bit to drink. The next day I had the mother of all hangovers (normally get one if I've had loads to drink but this was worse than usual). I didn't mix my drinks and stayed off the hard stuff. It wasn't until the evening that I discovered I hadn't taken my full dose of Lantus that night. I took 24 instead of 34 units. I was just wondering could the miserable feeling be attributed to not taking the full dose? What happens people if they don't take their basal?

If you don't take your basal your BG goes high. Did you test at all from the time you took the 24 units till you realized it the next night? How bout while you were drinking? It sounds to me like you didn't. Therefore it's hard to attribute how much of the feeling was from drinking vs. running high.

1. not enough lantus would make you high, not low.
2. did you eat anything before going to sleep after drinking?
When you drink, you shuold eat before you sleep, as your liver is concentrating on breaking down the alcohol instead of dumping glucose, so you eat to supply you with glucose through the night, as alcohol will lower your BG.
So it's possible that you had a hypo in the night, which made the hangover worse. I've had hypo's in the night and it makes me feel like i've been drinking the night before when i wake up... so maybe you had a hangover... and had that too making it feel 10 times worse!?

I did have something to eat that night before bed and would have tested several times the next day. I was low most of the following day too - I didn't feel like eating much all day.

I would think the only symptom of not enough Lantus would be high blood sugar.

I'm 37 now, and I have to finally admit that I am no longer 'down wit da kids' as I cannot hold my drink anymore. It kills me if I overdo it, and I'm old enough and dull enough now to realise that the aftermath just isn't worth it. Well, most of the time
Beer can have a fair old carb content, so can make you high whilst your at it and then low during the night just for kicks and giggles.
1 pint of water for every pint of beer when you get home (or as much water as you can physically stomach), plus a bite to eat. As well as the water helping with the wonderful dehydration (which I am told is the main cause of hangover symptoms), it will also mean you wake up to visit the toilet a few times in the night. On each occasion, you can blood test and do something about it.
Oh, and an alka-seltzer chaser before bed as a preventative can help as well. Or it does me anyway.
I've just cut down on the lantus and (apart from today) that has actually made me feel better. Not that I've had a beer to fully empathise with you, so best ignore this last bit :)
