Do you have an evening snack to avoid going low during the night? And if so, at what blood glucose level do you have a snack? And do you cover it with insulin? My husband and I like to have a snack/dessert around 8:00 PM each evening. I'll have low carb ice cream and a cookie or some strawberries I've thawed out. I always cover it with insulin. But most nights my blood sugars go up around 3:00 AM. I'm not always sure if that is because of the snack or the dawn phenomenon. I will often check my sugars around midnight and am generally within range (90-100). The last two nights I have not had a snack. Night before last I was 101 at 10 PM, 73 at 2:00 AM and 103 at 6 AM. Not bad. But last night I was 96 (no snack), 63 at 2:00 AM (ate 1 Startburst=4 carbs) and 60 at 6:00 AM. So ... do you ever really figure this disease out?

I don't usually have a snack...though i'm T2 and not on insulin. I would think, however, that a high-protein snack with help with the dawn phenomenon.

I used to but I haven't bothered with it for many years.

I hate feeding the insulin... The pump helps, but there are times when I need to pop a glucose tab or two before going to bed.

Hey Suz! Nope I generally don't eat a snack at night. There are rare occassions that I will have tea and a cookie around 8:00 pm. But.....most of the time I don't eat much past dinnertime.

Hi SuzannaOR - I have an evening snack every night too, but not because I have to to avoid going low, I just do it because I like it! Always a cup of tea plus something......popcorn, mixed nuts, cheese, fruit, yogurt, something like that. I do take insulin for it. If I eat at 8 pm then I check my bg at 10 and again at 11. If a correction bolus is needed then I take it. I like my bg to be around 6 at bedtime. I don't snack on things that I have to guess/estimate the carb content on because I prefer to not have to correct and go to bed with insulin "on board." It can definately be frustrating because there are so many variables.:)

If I am low ( I like to go to bed on a 7) at bedtime or just before....I eat a few sweets - I finf liquorice allsorts a good long acting sweet. I usually land around 4.5 - 5 mmol/L at wake up. But then I eat...... lol

Tanya, you're my kind of person! Truth be known, I have my evening snack because I like it, too! LOL However, I'm also trying to lose 10 pounds, so quitting evening snacks is one of my tactics! My blood sugars also seem to be improving in the mornings, which is a good benefit, too.

Ya know what SuzannaOR? Two years ago now, I lost about 45 lbs. following the Weight Watchers points plan and exercising on my treadmill. Two things that I wouldn't give up were my coffee and my evening snack! They make me happy, so I didn't want to change that. I could handle making other changes but not those two things! I would definately pre-plan my evening snacks though, not just wait until I was peckish and start looking around because that's when you tend to pick the bad stuff! Good luck with the weight loss! It's hard but worth it!

Before being Dxd, a pre-bedtime snack was my norm. After the Dx, I cut it out. That worked out well until I began using Lantus. I inject once a day, about 9 p.m. I quickly discovered that I tended to go hypo about 7 or 8 a.m. That got scary. The endo recommended I go back to a light snack at bedtime. It's usually 200 calories, peanut butter and crackers.

I do simply because it's a way to protect myself from going low {nudge, nudge, wink, wink:wink: }

Actually, I do notice a difference in the mornings:

Snack = touch higher, between 5 and 6

No snack = mid to upper 4s

I feel better when I'm in the 5-6 range.

Hi SuzannOR - I do have a small snack in the evening. Only because I'm usually hungry ;)

Now, that being said I'm pretty new to the "game" of trying to control my sugars and I am FAR ---> VERY FAR - from where I need to be.

I hope my evening snack doesn't need to be dropped. I'm sure I'll figure that out soon...
