I RECENTLY WAS DIAGNOSD W/ TYPE 2 AND I TAKE 25 UNITS OF LANTUS AT BEDTIME, AND A 4MG AMARYL IN MORNING W/ BREAKFAST AND ANOTHER 4MG AMARYL W/ SUPPER. MY SUGAR IS NEVER OVER 100 BEFORE A MEAL AND RARELY GOES ABOVE 120-125 AFTER A MEAL. I QUIT TAKING MY LANTUS CAUSE IT WAS DROPPING MY BG LEVEL IN MIDDLE OF NITE TO BELOW 63 AND WAS AFRAID IT WOULD DROP MORE WHILE ASLEEP. NOW ALL I TAKE IS THE AMARYL 4MG TWICDAILY AND MY LEVELS STILL ARE BELOW 100 BEFORE MEAL AND NEVER MORE THAN 130 AFTER MEAL. I WANTED TO TALK TO OTHER DIABETICS AND GET YOUR OPINION IF THIS IS CONSIDERED DIABETES AND YALLS SITUATIONS TO GIVE ME AN IDEA OF WHATS GOING ON CAUSE IM PRETTY MUCH LOST AND CONFUSED:confused: AT THIS POINT I HAVE BEEN TOLD A MILLION DIFFERENT THINGS AND ALSO IS IT HARMFUL TO STOP TAKING THE LANTUS IS IF I WAS ONLY ON IT FOR LESS THAN 3MONTHS? ANY INFO GREATLY APPRECIATED

I got out of the hospital in December and the doctor started me on 65 units of lantus plus two glyburide/metformin a day. I was to take the lantus before I went to bed. I would wake up around 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning
shaking terribly and feeling like I was going to pass out. I would check my blood sugar and it would be in the low 50's. It kinda scared me so I, too, quit taking the lantus. I talked with the doctor and he said to stay on it and to reduce the units to 60. I still didn't feel confident in taking the lantus so I stopped taking it again. Now, I'm watching what I eat and walking on my treadmill. It seems to me that diet (low carbs) works better for me than anything. My blood sugars range 70 to 150 depending on what I eat. I'm not a doctor, this just seems to work for me (right now anyway!). Oh, while I was in the hospital (ICU) my highest reading was 720 and they had me on a contineous insulin drip. Diabetes is to be taken seriously! I would check with your doctor before you quit taking any medication.
It's absolutely BRILLIANT if you can control diabetes without insulin!! Just make sure you're watching closely. How often do you test? Is your body really struggling to get those numbers down after a meal? Perhaps Lantus is the boost it needs so that it can do it faster, easier, and with less strain on the rest of your body?
If you're happy with your results and really think you don't need it, then don't have it.. but please keep a really close eye on your BG and make sure you keep up with exercise and watching carbs.
Taking insulin can give your pancreas a rest, make it last longer... so do consider that. It may be better for you to take at least a little bit?

Hi HotRod:
Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find all sorts of great information here.
I'm T2 as well, but not on insulin...yet, so I have no experience to go on here, but If I were you, i'd at least call the doc who prescribed your meds and let him know about the lows you've been having and how you've adjusted your meds to compensate, just so he'll be in the know and it will be in your chart for your next visit.
Again, Welcome.

I would back off on the lantus and just take say 2U off at a time and see how you go.
