hi Stephanie, welcome to the forum,

I am newly diagnosed with type 1 too... and I am still experimenting.

Let us know ur regimine , so that one could possibly think abt why ur BG fell that fast and hopefully advise in right direction.

I wish my BG would fall that fast (I am always having problem keeping it down)

Any way welcome to the forum, Its a great place to ask ur questions especially for newbies like us.

I have had aquianted myself with this disease by reading as much as possible and have had great suggestions and responses for my questions here.

All the best.

I have problems with sudden drops in blood sugar but I don't think I've had it drop that fast. I wish I had some suggestions for you but I'm at a loss at this point.

Welcome Stephanie,
Does your BG drop that rapidly frequently or was this a one off?
If you write down your normal regime and whats happening to your BGL I'm sure someone may be able to make suggestions. There are many with far more expertise on insulin/diet regimes than I.

I don't normally drop by that amount but can drop rapidly ,if I do its for one of the following reasons:
Eating fast sugars sometimes causes me to go too high after a meal and then drop more quickly than usual.
Exercising hard earlier in the day and not reduced insulin with the next meal.
Doing an activity that effects me more than I anticipate (I had a 60 point drop in 10 minutes on what I thought was a gentle up hill walk the other day)
My BGL is also much more unpredictable just before a period.(although I'm perimenopausal so my large swings in hormone levels shouldn't apply to you!)

I have a 1 unit per carb scale, and a sliding scale of 1 unit per every 50 bg's over 150. I also take Lantus at night, and I take 32 units of that. The severe drop yesterday was after eating, but b/4 I took my insulin for what i ate.
I then bounced back up to 456 last night an hour later. Some of it probably has to do with emotions, but that drastic doesn't seem normal. I have had type 1 since I was eleven, so nine yrs. thanks for all the replys

We'll help where we can, there are lots of really knowledgable people around, so don't be shy to ask anything at all that pops into your mind.

Hopefully things will settle once you get back on the pump.

Hey Steph *hugs* (Stephanie is an online friend of mine. I got her to come here :D)

I just thought of something. When you checked your glucose and it was high, did you clean your hands before the test? I know I don't always and if I have juice or anything with sugar, it'll throw the numbers off. If I see a number that's high or low, I'll definately wash my hands and check again just to make sure it's real.

Welcome Stephanie,
You've joined a real good site here. Lots of info and advise. Lots of fun too. Hope you really enjoy it. There are so many imponderables at work here. What about your basal, i.e. is it right?. What sort of meals do you have? Do you count carbs for each meal? Do you use Glycaemic Index info in your choice of food? Do you exercise? Are you specific with your diet plan? Do you use Carbohydrate Index at meal time or to be precise, what sort of regime are you on? Give us some more info and we may be able to give some better advise. Again welcome and enjoy.

Hi Stephanie,

I really do understand what you are going thru honestly. I was like this up until October. There are so many things that I have changed and it took a while but now I spike the highest is 287, I have not seen a 300 this year period and I am happy for that. First I was on more Lantus then my body required because I wasn't keeping it in the fridge oops, long story. Well then once i started doing that I am comforably at about 20 units, and it is still too much sometimes but with the balance of running around some days pms stress and hormones this is the best I am gonna get.......so I stick with that many units......Also I learned that if your lantus is off you can't get it right period and I mean if it is way off.....so for instance when you take Lantus check your sugars five hours later if is within 30 pts as when you took your lantus your on the right path. Once established you have to figure your ratio out period......it is hard and it may not always be precise cause foods still have a different effect. I noticed if every meal is well balanced I can eat those pizza's and french fries and they work like a charm.......I can eat chocolate but I have to have nuts with it so the chocalte doesn't linger in body forever.....it is hard but it is a start....let me know how you are doing cause you strike me as the way I was till October and then it still has been a struggle and I have decided on a pump because I cannot get it right right but I am happy that I am not spiking and most of the time I am ranging between 70-130 now,

Cheryl

Do you like basketball? That was certainly a rebound: your liver released a ton of glucose in response to your hypo. Your 1u per carb and 32u of Lantus concerns me as they are very high. It tells me you are overweight and could shed a bunch of weight. Of course I'm speculating. Do some research on splitting your lantus into two doses. Also try some basal rate profiling: what do your sugars do when you skip meals. Dr. Google has tons of info. Pretend you are pumping; the lterature really applies to all regardless of regimine. Only one bolus ratio is probably not reality either. I'm much higher at breakfast, and slightly higher at dinner. Eat some very countable carbs and test to determine, after basal profiling.

I've dropped that fast by getting humalog into muscle instead of fat, for me the humalog didn't work for 4 hours and then it all acted in a matter of minutes. This was when I was injecting in my leg, it's a little trickier than the stomach and upper arm areas.

Welcome Stephanie. How long have you had diabetes for? How many grams of carbohydyate equal 1 carb for you? I assume 1 carb = 10g.

Menace there is no way she is on a 1:1 ratio on 32u of lantus and a 1:50 correction factor.

I agree... 1 unit of fast acting insulin per 1g of carbs does not seem right. 1 unit of insulin per 1 serving of carbs (16g) seems more realistic. Have you done any testing to see what the ratios really are?

Welcome aboard, BTW :wavey:
