View Full Version : What would you do if you had one day without Diabetes?

Wow...what a good question...saw it on another Diabetes Forum last month, and I couldn't stop thinking about it.
I can barely remember any days when I didn't have it. In fact, the one day that comes clearly to my mind was about a month before being diagnosed when I only cared about getting enough water at the state fair and could care less about enjoying the day.
A day without diabetes...I think I'd have a drink...a good glass of wine, then I'd have a cigarette...then I'd probably eat a funnel cake. Maybe go to a movie and eat popcorn and tons of milk duds in my popcorn. Then I might even go run for a while without having to worry about my BGs. Then I might talk to all those non-diabetics about how diabetics can really eat what they want (as long as they bolus correctly for it) and to stop judging them.
My diabetes turned 21 this year. And my opthamologist just told me that he would never had known I was diabetic had I not told him. Guess there are small blessings in the midst of our struggles.
Not complaining here...just dreaming. ;)

Since you are type 1, I assume you are taking insulin. What is holding you back from doing any of those things you want to do?

want a completely HONEST answer???
I probably wouldn't change anything about my diet, or what i drink...
I'd just enjoy not having to think about how much insulin i need to take and reminding myself to test all the time.... i'd very much enjoy that!
No worries for a day.

One day without Diabetes wouldn't make a difference
to me. Whatever "UltraNormal" things I'd want to do
that one day would come back and bite me in the a$$
the next day. Otherwise, as far as Diabetes, I just lead
a relatively normal life.
It was RA that kicked my butt....

the same stuff I do now minus the needles....

I'd probably go wild doing everything diabetics are not supposed to do and kill myself as a result in a very short time. The freedom I'd get from not having to think about what I do or eat or drink and not having to think about making sure I have everything packed when I go away. I think we should encourage everyone to eat as we do. It would greatly improve life for most people. Liz32 says it all.

The same exact thing I do everyday, only without my pump.
Nothing differently than I do now. :dontknow:

Oh, and btw, it's possible to eat chinese, funnel cakes, and milkshakes all the time and still keep your bs somewhat in control. But non-diabetics don't do this either. Because they'll gain weight, have constant indigestion, and clog their arteries.

I am type 1 but I would get drunk and pass out, cause this is too dangerous to do when your a diabetic and since alcohol is so hard to figure out I would get a tad wasted other then that I would eat and not worry about things, I am not a bad girl but it would be nice to binge for one day without worrying so much about dosing and correcting like a big dairy queen blizzard munching on potato chips and eating lots of oreo cookies with milk yummy, and for this I don't thing one day is gonna kill me of doing this and I am not going to say I wouldn't change a thing cause I don't think the food I just said would kill me and like i'd gain 50 pounds from it it is only one day and why not go and splurge sorry I love food and being a type 1 you still have a lot of counting and worrying to do, regardless, so it would be nice not having to or better yet going out to a restaurant and eating the appetizers and then the big meal yummy sorry, I have issues occasionally trying to figure everything out so it would be nice not to worry about it and not checking and not counting and not correcting and nothing else..........I choose food and drinks

Eat an entire onion pizza!
But, really, we could all take one day and overdue it if we wanted. It's just that we chose not to, because we are so disciplined, and fear what the future holds. I'm sure that if I wanted to, I could eat an entire pizza today and probably still be okay, but I am obsessed with the cumulative effects...also, I fear that if I relax my standards just one day, I might just lose my motivation; kind of like an alcoholic risking a drink. It's probably not a good idea.

Good question ;) ...I would (actually have) do these things, but I should have better stated...all without having to think about any BGs or insulin...

Great question. My biggest problem with D is the worry of hypos and highs so I don't think I could do anything different with one day though. I am so coditioned to having diabetes I'd still think and act exactly the way I do now. It would literally take me months if not years to readjust. I would drink a ton of mt dew though in that day.

I would just jump on a plane without packing anything more than bare necessities, and jet off to some random locale where I'd travel on a shoestring without any worries of whether I'd go low, have enough insulin, test strips, etc etc.
Or maybe just run around the city all day with nothing but my bank card and house keys tucked into my jeans pocket. No tester, no glucose tabs!

I think it would be a little weird for me, tbh. I mean, I haven't had Diabetes as long as some of my fellow members on here, but long enough that I think I would also experience the same thoughts and feelings about it as I do now. I don't think I would quite believe that i was really OK~ and, unfortunately, probably wouldn't enjoy the day as much as I could and should :(

I really don't think it would change my life very much. Just the freedom of no insulin, no testing, and having to carry a bag of supplies with me everywhere I go. Especially if I knew it was just for one day. One day without diabetes doesn't get me too excited.

I know what you mean...helps put it in perspective...I am loving all the answers here. So interesting...kind of takes the big and bad out of Diabetes.
I always tell people if I had to pick (or rather got to pick) on out of the top 10 diseases in America...I'd pick Diabetes.

Like Brian & some of the others, I'm so used to having Diabetes that I wouldn't change one thing on a day without it, let alone months (or maybe years, even) without it....I'd likely still test BGs and wear my pump (with a basal of 0.0 for the day ;)).
It's extremely hard to get "unused" to something I've had for so long, even if for a day. Personally, I've never felt Diabetes was so "big & bad" compared to other illnesses out there, and like you, I'd definitely pick Diabetes over any other condition! At least it's manageable - sometimes it may be difficult or frustrating (i.e. on "high days"), but it's still manageable. :)
