it will take at least 2 - 4 weeks on the metformin, gradual results in 2 weeks, by the end of the 4th week you should see a BIG Change since your diagnosis

Hi.
I started cutting carbs in Dec '06.
Diagnosed on Jan 8 and started Metformin that day.
With a combination of proper diet, exercise, and Metformin, I have lost 11 pounds and my latest fasting blood sugar was 105. It has been anywhere from 130's to 170's.
That was in 2 weeks. Looking forward to the bg results in 2 more weeks.

If glicizide is going to work for you, I think you should be able to see a difference the first and every time you take it. I think you definitely want to check your blood sugars frequently with this since you can't know how much extra insulin it will cause your pancreas to make. Glicizide is of the sulfonylurea group of drugs, and when you use those, it is possible to have an occasional problem with blood sugar going too low. If you are just beginning to work on getting blood sugars down, any sudden large decrease in levels can feel like a "hypo," so monitor blood sugar. If it seems to be too much decrease all at once, you can ask your doctor about taking less, or dropping one of the meds (probably glicizide).

I started seeing almost immediate decreases in BG once I started Metformin (only took maybe a couple of days).
Wasn't until we increased my dosage to 1000 2x day however, that I started consistently getting normal readings.

With me the Metformin took six weeks to make a significant difference and 3 to 6 months to get the sugar under control. When I added the Gliclazide and Pioglitazone after about 4 months on the Metformin, I could see an effect after a few days.

I am on metformin 500 mg 2 times a day, and within 2-3 days, I noticed a BIG drop in my levels...of course, by then, I had cut out all breads, potatoes, rice, pasta and sweets and started moving around more. I was told it could take up to 3 weeks to get the full benefit of the metformin.
I encourage you to watch the carb intake and try and get regular exercise (you may be doing this already). Also, keep a log of your blood sugar levels and test regularly.
If you continue to have higher than expected levels, you should check back with your doctor.

I'll be the negative voice here. I have never seen a decrease in my daily readings since starting metformin xr. I currently take 1000 mg a day.
But my A1c loves metformin! I was 6.6 when diagnosed but have been running 5.4 since starting the meds. So even if the meter isn't showing a significant drop when you test, it's still helping overall.
Don't get discouraged. It IS helping!

the thing about home tests is you see whats happening then and there, but the A1C shows you whats been happening behind the scenes so to say
