View Full Version : infusion set paranoia!

So, after a day of steadily creeping BGs, with the highest at 275, I finally gave in and changed out the set. However, the set was about 1.5 days old, had worked well since insertion, and appeared to be fine- in place and not kinked at all. In reality, I think that all I needed was a basal rate tweak- we'll see what a correction and an extra 0.05 u/hr does for me. But, after my experience with the bad box of sets earlier this month, I have become absolutely paranoid that the set is bad anytime I have "creepy" numbers. There's something to be said for "when in doubt, change it out", but I think I'm beginning to over-react. *sighs*

Does anyone else get paranoid about sets? Just one more thing about D that I hate....how compulsive it makes me about some things.... Thanks for listening...

I changed mine this morning. Took out the old one, got the new one ready, took a deep breath, SNAP! It was in, little sting, filled with blood. Grrrrrrrrr. Had to change it.:(

I had it happen to the other day. Scared me seeing blood "pulsating" in the tube. I am kinda anal about my infusion sets too. Takes me about 15 min to get it like I want it.

I haven't had a blood-filled set in a long time (knock on wood!). But I went through about 4 that kinked badly during/after insertion. Minimed was great about troubleshooting and replacing my sets (multiple times- very long story!), but I'm still freaked out every time I have a stubborn high BG....

Yes. It's often the first thing that comes to mind when I'm high. Unfortunately, it's difficult to diagnose.

I hate dealing with a bad set. I will check EVERYTHING else before I decide it's a bad set. But that can sometimes take half a day and not eating much.

But sometimes you have that bad feeling...the system isn't perfect...but not too shabby.

The sets I use are inserted with a spring. I never even see the tube. You might want to check out the Insets, they are great. I never think twice about changing my set.

I sometimes get sites that are 'slow.' In fact, just had one today. For me, these slow sites are the worst. Fasting (basal only), everything is fine. BGs perfect. When I bolus, however, it can appear as if I under-bolused because my BGs are way too high 2-4 hours after eating. I then correct based on my pump's reccommendation.. which inadvertently causes stacking because the first bolus is just starting to peak at, say, 4 hours (today's case).

Once I realize this it's an 'oh ****' moment because if I don't start taking in carbs, I might be really low, and persistently so, for a little while.

These sites require immediate changing. :(

Yeah, me too. I can't help to think that when my numbers are high, it's b/c of my site/set. Though, yes, this probably isn't aways the case. I don't usually change the site right away~ I guess I hope that the next reading will be lower and at that point, if they haven't changed, then I'll go ahead and change it out.
