Haven't been on for a few weeks. My Dad reads all the time and tells me what he is learning. This is a great referrence. Thanks to all who suggested the Pumping Insulin book. He got me one and it will be very helpful.
Our daughter is 13 and new to the pump for 10 days now. We do not have a handle on the basal. Going low at 7 am if we do not give her a 8-15g carb around4-5am. Good numbers like 118 or 138 at night are a fear because she goes too low. As soon as I change the rate, it seems something else happens.
Current rate is: 10pm-9am 0.8
9am-10pm 1.2
We did a 0.7 in there from 2am-9am for a few days, and then she was high.
Of course, I say this and last night we were out of town and she ate an appetizer and one third of a dessert at AppleBee's and went to bed at 298 and did not come down until 10am to 138 (we let he sleep in, but keep checking her)
Any suggestions on getting a good basal rate and what to do about bedtime snacks if she is low, normal, or high?
She usually wants something even when she is high. Also,
I am afraid she will not wake up if she is low. So far 47 is our lowest at night with the pump. Will she? I am tired!!!
Sorry so long! Overwhelmed!

Basals are tough ... keep at it

If she has a high protien high fat meal it will skew the BG for 6-8 hours after

Dont forget that you need to adjust the basal 2 hours before the problem

For ex - if she is low at 3 am you need to adjust the 1am basal rate

Resist the temptation to make basal changes based on one event - there are too many things involved to allow that level of troubleshooting

Ive been using a cozmo for over 2 years, been diabetic since 1988 and in the last few weeks my body has been throwing me a curve thats very confusing ... Its just the way it is

Ditto everything that Doug said above, and if she is going low around the same time every night, it might be time for a minor basal adjustment prior to that time.

BTW, anyone who pumps can address these kinds of issues. They are not brand specific, but are more related to the pumping in general.

If you don't have it, I highly recommend the book, Pumping Insulin, by John Walsh. Just about every issue relating to treatment via today's pumps is covered.

Good luck!
