Do you ever find yourself needing more insulin if you are fully out of your honeymoon, and on a 5x?

I don't use a minimed, but my insulin needs quadroupled in my first year following diagnosis. I still don't need a 300 unit reservoir, but I like having it, because I can change my reservoir every other site.

I got my 522 this October after MDI for 32 years. I was using 50 total of Humulin N and 6 total of Humalog. They wanted me to get the 522. I am now using just about 35 to 40 units per day of Humalog. I change my sets twice a week so the 522 resevoir is lasting fine. I could have gone with the 722 and change the resevoir once a week but I now use the same resevoir for a week. I just fill it twice. Not a big deal. It takes me only a ferw minutes for every set change. The 522 is slighty smaller but that is not really a big deal.

So far so good for me with the 522. I've been pumping since September and don't use close to a full resevoir before it's time for a set change.

so its ok to keep a reservoire in there for like a week, and only change the site?
how can 150 units(im guessing 150 after priming) last you more than like 4 days? even after 32 years of mdi.
do you not eat much?

i just cant decide, so why dont u guys decide for me, lol
its just that right now i use only 15 units a day in my animas, but its because i am in a serious honey moon. i have no idea what the future holds for my insulin needs :frown:

I think I phrased my response poorly. When I change a set I know the average amount of insulin I use over the three days the set will be in and only fill the reservoir with that much insulin. When I change the set the reservoir goes too and is very close to empty, usually two to five units are left.
I was just saying that my consumption of insulin hasn't risen dramatically since I went on the pump and hasn't approached the point where I have to fill the reservoir all the way.

Go with the 722 if you are not sure. It only sticks out 1/4" more.

This is the 512 & 712 side by side. They are the same size as the 522 & 722. You can see there in not much difference. http://www.insulin-pumpers.org.uk/images/paradigm512712.jpg

I only partially fill the reservoir also. I usually put in around 140 units or so and this lasts me my 3 1/2 days. I then reuse the reservoir and change the infusion and tubing. I only reuse the resevoir once. I use 2 infusion sets a week and 1 reservoir. Looking at my pump over the last 14 days I averaged 35.7 units and 207 grams of carbs per day. I have been pretty steady in my eating habits and insulin usage for the past few years so I don't anticipate any surge of insulin use. If I do need to ever go to the 722 I'll just have to upgrade and work it out with MM. I'm very satisfied with the 522.

Yes, it's ok to use the reservoir longer than 3 days.

also is the quickserter the same with paradigm, and non paradigm?

it doesnt go bad?
cuz i was actually thinking about it, and im honeymooning so much that it might be possible to fill a reservoire up to 300 units and use it for 1 month lol

1 month would be pushing it. I try and make it a week tops.
Insulin can be not refridgerated for 28 days before it goes bad. But it's probably a little less in plastic, and the seal on the reservoir will go bad.
You use less than 10 units a day?

I'm long out of my honeymoon and don't even remember how much insulin I took for the first 11 years (I didn't change my dose that whole time!).
I have the bigger pump because that's what Minimed sent. I don't need a 300 unit reservoir and at first I was upset about the larger size but now I don't mind. I fill the reservoir completely and change it every 3 set changes, or longer. One time I made it to 12 days, and finally put in a new reservoir with the 4th set.
I really hate filling and priming, even more than manually inserting a Silhouette, so if I only have to do it every 9-12 days I'm happier.

I generally use less than 1 vial of Humalog a month. For the last couple of vials, I've pre-filled 3 reservoirs and put the remaining bit in the reservoir I was currently using. I then put the 3 filled reservoirs into the Humalog box along with a transfer cap & plunger. I keep that in a small plastic case in my backpack along with a couple of extra sets, adhesive, Band Aids, a couple of syringes, AAA batteries, extra vials of strips and a tube of Neosporin. I haven't had any problems so far. I've always used a vial of insulin until it was empty.

I use 30-35 units a day, plus about 20 priming, so, maybe 120 in 3 days? I'm honeymooning too, though. When I started my pump I used about 15 a day.

wow this is difficult, even the poll is 50/50
dam i might as well just flip a coin
is there a bad side effect of using a 300 unit reservoire and only filling it up to like 200?
and is there a difference between putting a 300 and 176 unit reservoire in the 722? a visual difference? does it like slide around if u put the small one in the large pump?

I went back and forth for awhile and then decided on the 715. Glad I did. The size difference is so little, why not go with one that will work for four years no matter what?

Nope, no visual different with different reservoirs.
No, no disadvantage to under filling.

You know I never thought of looking at the daily totals....Guess that shows I'm new to the pump eh? I use 31-42 units daily. I have the MM 722. MM actually sent me the 522 pump with the 722 supplies by mistake. You cannot use the 722 reservoirs with the 522, BUT you can use the 522 with the 722. I had both in my hands at one point and the difference really isn't that much considering the size of both. I went with the 722 due to the unknown of how much insulin I truly need. (currently down to 1:4 ratio for bolus) I look at it like this, I can fill it up all the way and just change out the set and use the reservoir until it's empty instead of going thru them like the sets. Saves $3.00 on every other site change, so this works for me. Good luck with the pump, which ever one you decide to go with !!!

Even though I had the 512 (or 5xx series of pumps), I'd opt now for the 7xx series. It's just more practical to me....and, I think you can use either reservoir (180 u or 300 u).
I have the 512, but only use about 20-30 units a day, so one reservoir easily lasts 2 set changes. I'm well beyond the honeymoon and my TDDs haven't changed much since I started pumping 8 years ago, so I felt comfortable going with the smaller pump. If I was closer to my honeymoon and felt like things were still changing, I might get the 7xx and be done with it. Like others have said, it's not the much bigger but will give you so much more flexibility.

No choice with the Cozmo reservoir, so that was easy. The rep said that their next pump will have 3 choices. I intend to fill the reservoir and use it for a week. The only time that could cause a problem is if you are in the hot sun a lot. In that case a pump Frio would be good. My son uses far more insulin than my daughter does, probably 3 times her 30 units a day. She was diagnosed 5 years ago, so no honeymoon going on.

MM-515.........My total basal insulin for the day is 12.30 units. My daily insulin total is between 20-28 units, depending on how overboard I go with the carb intake.
I change my site and reservoir every 3 days. I fill the reservoir to about 110-120 units before priming. When I first started pumping 15 months ago, I filled the entire reservoir because that's how I was taught. One day my brother was over and was watching me fill the reservoir. He asked why I was filling it all the way and I told him I thought that's what I was supposed to do. He's on the MM-715 and said he doesn't fill his all the way. So from that point on I only fill the reservoir for what I need.
