View Full Version : How long does it take to get basics figured out

I've been pumping for three days now and we've just made the first changes to my basal rates yesterday evening. We started at 0.6u/h all day and 1.0u/h between 4:00 and 8:00 because I have a really strong dawn phenomenon (biggest reason for going on the pump, hated waking up high EVERY morning). So anyway I've been running high basically constantly other than the first day when Lantus was still helping out a bit, and so the diabetes nurse said I should bump everything up by 0.1u/h so 0.7 and 1.1, and now, hah, I'm just higher! My readings are very steady, just high (all between 8-11 [144-200] for the most part with some a tad higher). But oh well, I don't expect it all to be worked out right away, she said it will take a few weeks. Just wondering how long it took to get basal rates and such worked out for most people? She thinks my carb ratios are fine, correction ratios might need adjusting, even though that was the one thing we actually didn't change in the Lantus to pump switch.

Hi JJeenn! We fiddled for a week, but results were good from the very beginning. Even the smallest amount of insulin can make a big difference so better to make changes slowly of course! Maybe it's time for a site change? I change every three days. Good luck!

Hi! I have my first site change today. The diabetes nurse says my results are really good (way more stable even in just three days than I was on injections) but that the "baseline" is too high, so she said the basal rates just need to be higher/tweaked and then things should come down.

I notice you're from BC - I'm in North Vancouver! :wavey:

It took me about a week, but my team really, REALLY grilled me as we ramped up for the pump. I had already basically figured out what my basals should be before I got the pump--that's the most critical part of this equation.

I'm looking forward to that part. The part about where you get the basics figured out. Till then, I will be a blubbering idiot.:s:

I started pumping on a Saturday (Dec. 05') and by Tuesday morning my endo had upped my basal rates a bit. Two weeks after that, I "tweaked" them a bit on my own. When I saw my endo 8 weeks later, he made some changes by adding 2 more basal times and upped my basal rates again. Almost a year later, I have the same basal rates and my BS is running in target range.
